 Der Alpenwagen IIIa war erste Fahrzeugtyp mit dem charakteristischen Glasdach und dem markanten Lufteinlass über der Windschutzscheibe, der einer zusätzlichen Belüftung des Fahrgastraumes diente. Insgesamt wurden 41 Fahrzeuge dieses Typs von der PTT beschafft. Zeitgleich waren dies auch die letzten Normallenker Fahrzeuge der PTT, welche dann in der Folge von der Frontlenker-Generation abgelöst wurde.

Der Sauerer L4C fand seinen Einsatz hauptsächlich auf den Sommersaisonlinien in den Alpen. Wohl kein anderes Modell der sogenannten Schnauzen-Postautos verfügte über mehr Komfort, Rundumsicht und eine derart schöne Linienführung
