Ob sich Menschen heute noch über ihren Beruf definieren, wie es August Sander in den 1920er Jahren für seine Porträts der Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts voraussetzte? Sind unsere heutigen Identitäten nicht viel komplexer oder gar multipolar? Nach der großen August Sander-Ausstellung im Sommer 2022 am Centre Pompidou lohnte es sich, die Kategorien und Filter des Kölner Foto- grafen hundert Jahre später auf die große Pariser Institution selbst anzuwenden. Dort gibt es nicht nur eine Vielzahl von Tätigkeitsfeldern, die Belegschaft stellt auch einen sozialen Querschnitt dar: eine kleine Gesellschaft innerhalb der großen städtischen Gesellschaft. Dieses Anliegens haben sich Andreas Langfeld (Fotografie) und Florian Ebner (Idee und Text) angenommen und gemeinsam eine Aktualisierung des Sander'schen Porträt-Atlas konzipiert. Es entstand ein Ge- sellschaftsporträt, das nicht die illustrative Entsprechung sucht, sondern gerade in seinen Unter- schieden und Widersprüchen ein Bildnis unserer 2020er Jahre zeichnet. Florian Ebner ist Fotograf und Kunsthistoriker. Seit Sommer 2017 leitet er die fotografische Sammlung des Centre Pompidou, Paris. Andreas Langfeld arbeitet mit Fotografie und Film im Feld des Dokumentarischen. Seine Arbeiten treibt ein Interesse für gesellschaftspolitische und medienreflexive Fragen an.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
