Players lead rival realms through expansion, resource production, construction, technology, diplomacy, and war. Each faction and leader offers asymmetric advantages, while region-specific powers create different paths across the Holy Roman Empire map. The action-selection system rewards timing, because actions left on the board can create secondary opportunities when other players choose similar options. Build cities and fortresses, raise armies, claim noble titles, and compete for dominance through both planning and force. Solo play is included, and the game can be combined with Dark Ages: Heritage of Charlemagne for a larger map and expanded player count.
