About the Workshop:

This in-person class at the Center for Book Arts is taught by instructor Hadley Vogel. In this introductory course, you will learn the basic use of bookbinding tools and materials, along with fundamental bookbinding structures.

Students will explore non-adhesive structures, bindings for single sheets, and other bindings that require minimal specialized equipment. Techniques covered include accordions, pamphlets, French stitch, Japanese stab binding, double accordion, and flag books.

This class is ideal for those who wish to learn simple forms for presenting their work or to build a solid foundation in bookbinding.

Required Materials:

  • Pencil and paper for taking notes
  • Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get stained or dirty (CBA will provide aprons, but the ink used on press can stain)

About the Instructor:

Hadley Vogel (b. 1987) is a second generation bookbinder who apprenticed from an early age under her father Paul Vogel of the Vogel Bindery in East Hampton, NY. In addition to her apprenticeship on Long Island, Hadley worked under master binder Martín Farfán Patiño, of Farfán Encuadernadores, Mexico City, MX, where she honed her skills, focusing on restorations of historic volumes from Mexican museum and institutional collections. Since the opening of Hadley Hill Bindery, she has focused on the development of experimental forms, including plush bindings and the use of recycled fur, melding contemporary aesthetics with traditional construction processes.

Not for aggressive chewers
Pattern Name: Octopus, Pattern Name: Octopus
Rating a 3 because the dog loves it, but definitely not "indestructible". Had a tear in one leg the first day and this is 4 days later. Leg is off and stuffing is out. 6 months old, 35 lbs. It was worth a shot. You get what you pay for.

My 80 lb American bulldog and staffy mix absolutely LIVES this little octopus. He literally destroys everything but NOT the octopus, lol. It is well made and has lasted months which is a huge deal. Great buy

Large & Well Made
Pattern Name: Octopus
Although quite large for a small dog it does provide lots of entertainment. It's soft has crinkle in the legs which does entertain my little guy.
