DESCRIPTION:

"The Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew" is a strikingly etching by the Spanish artist Jusepe de Ribera, published in 1624. The composition depicts the gruesome torture and execution of Saint Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, who was flayed alive. Ribera's masterful ability to convey the intense physical and emotional pain of the subject make this work an important part of Baroque art. The intricate details and masterful use of light and shadow in Ribera's work display his skill as an artist and a storyteller. Ribera's depiction of the brutal violence inflicted upon Bartholomew reflects the religious and political turmoil of 17th-century Europe. This piece serves as an important example of the ways in which art can reflect and interpret the cultural and historical contexts in which it was created. The etching is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. There is a handwritten signature on the back of the book. Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652) was a Spanish Baroque artist who specialized in painting, drawing, and printmaking. He was known for his ability to capture the human form in a naturalistic manner. Born in Valencia, Ribera studied under Francisco Ribalta before moving to Italy in 1616, where he was heavily influenced by the works of Caravaggio. He later settled in Naples, where he gained a reputation as a master of chiaroscuro, and became a highly sought-after artist in his lifetime.
