No Painting Needed — Premium Hive Defence Built In

The bottom board is the foundation of every healthy hive — and most beekeepers underestimate just how much it impacts colony health. A bad bottom board means beetle infestations, moisture damage, ant invasions, and stressed colonies. Our Wax-Dipped Mesh Bottom Board with Beetle Trap delivers all-season hive defence in a single thoughtfully-engineered unit — and every board now comes wax-dipped as standard, no painting required, ever.

Made from premium New Zealand pine treated with hot wax that penetrates deep into the timber fibres — a traditional commercial beekeeping treatment used by serious operators for over a century. Features include a fine stainless mesh screen floor, removable beetle trap tray, slanted entrance for drainage, and rubber-lined feet for ground isolation. Every detail is engineered for genuine hive defence. Available in both 8-frame and 10-frame sizes to fit your Langstroth setup. At $71.49 (was $75.49), it’s the bottom board upgrade your colonies will thank you for — with cleaner hives, healthier brood, and dramatically less seasonal maintenance.

Why Wax-Dipped Instead of Painted?

Every bottom board we sell is wax-dipped — because it’s genuinely superior to painted timber in every way that matters:

No painting required — ever — the wax penetrates the timber, providing built-in weather protection that lasts the life of the board

Penetrates deep into the timber — unlike paint which only coats the surface, hot wax soaks into the wood fibres for genuine protection

Zero chemicals near your bees — just pure natural beeswax and microcrystalline wax; nothing toxic, nothing synthetic

Better moisture resistance — wax repels water at the molecular level; paint can crack, peel, and let moisture in over time

Naturally bee-friendly — bees recognise wax as part of their natural environment; some research suggests they accept wax-treated equipment faster

Lasts longer — wax-dipped boards typically last 20+ years vs 10–15 for well-maintained painted boards

     No re-coating needed — painted boards need re-painting every 3–5 years; wax-dipped is a one-time treatment that’s done

What Exactly Is Wax Dipping?

Wax dipping is a traditional commercial beekeeping wood treatment that’s been used for over a century. The process is straightforward: timber components are submerged in a hot bath of beeswax mixed with microcrystalline or paraffin wax at around 150°C. The high temperature drives any moisture out of the wood, and the molten wax flows deep into the timber fibres, replacing the water and sealing the wood from the inside out. Once cooled, the timber is completely weatherproof, rot-resistant, and treated with materials that are 100% bee-safe. This is how New Zealand commercial beekeepers have protected their equipment for generations — and now you can have the same premium finish on your hive’s most important component.

How Does the Mesh + Beetle Trap Work?

This is genuinely the most effective chemical-free beetle control system available. Three-stage defence:

Stage 1 — Bees push beetles down — worker bees naturally try to expel beetles, herding them toward the floor

Stage 2 — Beetles fall through mesh — the fine stainless screen lets debris and beetles pass through but stops bees from going down

Stage 3 — Beetles trapped in tray — the removable tray below collects them where they can’t escape back into the hive

Result: dramatic reduction in small hive beetle populations without using any chemicals near your honey. This is exactly the approach recommended by Australian beekeeping associations — and it works year-round.

What’s the Best Substance to Use in the Tray?

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is genuinely the best choice — it’s what experienced Australian beekeepers consistently recommend. Better than cooking oil and dramatically better than nothing. Here’s why DE wins:

100% natural and chemical-free — just fossilised diatom shells; completely safe near your honey and bees

Mechanically kills beetles — the microscopic sharp edges of the DE particles damage the beetles’ exoskeletons and dehydrate them; no chemicals needed

Stays dry and effective longer — oil pools turn rancid in hot weather and need replacing every 1–2 weeks; DE stays effective for months

No mess or smell — oil leaks if the tray is bumped and creates a sticky cleanup; DE is a clean dry powder

Won’t attract bees — bees can be drawn into oil traps and drown; DE doesn’t attract them

Cheap and easy to find — food-grade DE is widely available; a single bag treats your traps for an entire year

How to use: sprinkle a thin layer (about 5–10mm deep) across the bottom of the tray; slide back into position; check and refresh every 1–2 months during beetle season. That’s it.

Why Is the Slanted Entrance Important?

Water is the silent killer of beehives. Standing water at the entrance leads to mould, mildew, rotted timber, drowned bees, and seriously stressed colonies. A slanted entrance solves this elegantly: rainwater that hits the entrance immediately flows down and away from the hive rather than pooling. This single design detail transforms hive longevity in regions with regular rainfall (which is most of Australia). Combined with the rubber-lined feet keeping the entire board off the ground, your hive sits in genuinely dry, well-drained conditions year-round — even during heavy autumn storms.

What Do the Rubber-Lined Feet Actually Do?

Four genuine practical functions:

Ground moisture barrier — lifts the entire bottom board off the wet ground; prevents the rot and decay that destroys hives sitting directly on damp soil

Insect protection — makes it harder for ants, termites, and crawling insects to reach the hive entrance

Vibration dampening — absorbs minor ground movement that would otherwise stress the bees

Stability — provides level support on uneven ground; prevents the hive tilting and collecting moisture

Beekeeper-friendly tip: Combined with a proper hive stand, the rubber-lined feet add genuine extra protection — don’t skip the stand thinking the feet are enough.

How Does Dual-Function Ventilation Work?

This is one of the smartest features. The removable tray gives you two distinct operating modes depending on the season:

Tray IN — Beetle protection mode (autumn, winter, spring): tray catches beetles and debris; standard configuration most of the year

Tray OUT — Summer ventilation mode (hot weather): removing the tray opens full mesh ventilation under the hive; dramatically reduces internal temperature and humidity

During Australian summer heatwaves, hive overheating is a real problem — brood can die, queens stop laying, and colonies cluster outside the hive. The open-tray ventilation mode lets the colony breathe through the floor, dropping internal temperatures by 5–10°C on extreme days. Slide the tray back in when temperatures normalise. Seasonal adaptability without buying separate equipment.

Should I Get 8-Frame or 10-Frame?

Choose based on your hive system:

8-Frame (50.5cm × 35.5cm): if you have an 8-frame Langstroth hive system — the lighter, more approachable beekeeping standard that’s growing in popularity

10-Frame (50.5cm × 40.5cm): if you have a standard 10-frame Langstroth system — the most common Australian configuration

Important: 8-frame and 10-frame components are NOT interchangeable. Make sure to select the size that matches your existing brood boxes and supers. If you’re building a new hive, our matching 8-frame and 10-frame Ideal boxes pair perfectly with this bottom board.

How Do I Maintain the Bottom Board?

Maintenance is genuinely minimal thanks to the wax-dipped finish:

Empty the beetle trap tray every 1–2 months during beetle season — just slide out, dispose of contents, refill with DE, slide back

Clean the mesh screen annually with a soft brush — remove accumulated wax debris and propolis

Check rubber-lined feet annually for wear or ant damage — replace if needed (parts available)

Exterior maintenance — essentially zero; the wax dipping does all the protection work

No re-painting ever — unlike painted bottom boards that need re-coating every few years, your wax-dipped board is a permanent solution

Who Is This Bottom Board Built For?

This bottom board is essential equipment for any serious Australian beekeeper. It’s especially valuable for anyone with small hive beetle pressure (most of Australia), backyard beekeepers wanting set-and-forget pest control, hobbyists upgrading from solid timber bottom boards to better-performing mesh designs, commercial beekeepers needing reliable bulk hive equipment, beekeepers in humid or wet climates (coastal Queensland, NSW, Victoria) where moisture is a constant threat, anyone tired of repainting hives, and new beekeepers building their first hive from quality components.

Best face lotion for combination skin
Size: 1.3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Best face lotion. Leaves my skin feeling hydrated without being oily (I have combination skin). Only downside is no sun protection. But lotions with sunscreen tend to make me break out. Ive used this lotion for about 8 years and its the only one that I dont break out with.

My Holy Grail for really good moisturizing!!
Size: 1.3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Ok this is long but worth it, I hope. I absolutely LOVE this moisturizer. It is very moisturizing, and doesn't just sit on top of your skin, it soaks in! I messed up my skin barrier with some products because as I hit my 40's it couldn't handle the strong stuff (Retinal, Vit C, AHA/BHA) that I have used daily for 20 yrs. So rude, like hormone changes and wrinkles weren't enough, lol. All of a sudden my super oily skin was still oily, but also had really dry spots. I was at a loss. This moisturizer works so well and helped repair my skin barrier without breaking me out!! I also use the Avene Thermal Spring Water spray, it also really helped me get my skin back under control and I will never stop using it. The water spray is super light, feels like water, and soaks in so well... truly is very moisturizing while being super light. I apply that first, then my serums and moisturizer. **Other products I also use: the Avene Cleanance Concentrate I use on my areas where I get blemishes (still getting breakouts in your 40's is also rude)... it helps those areas stay clear but moisturized, doesn't dry my skin at ALL. Also use there Retrinal and A-Oxitive... my skin just was not tolerating my usual stronger Retinal and VitC. These two work really well without the irritation!! Iise them on alternating days for now. I have tried many many brands, skincare is my thing...and I truly love every single product I have used by this brand, really am glad I found this product line!! Hope this helps someone.

Great quality of product
Size: 1.3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This cream has always been my favorite because it has great quality and effectiveness, I bought it two times and before I used to wear it in the summer and it did not make my skin oily. It is lighter, yet moisturizing if you know what I mean.

This is the new formula, with a blue cap
Size: 1.3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This cream has been a great basic moisturizer for use with acne creams (.25% tretinoin, in my case). You may notice some reviewers saying it's fake because of the blue cap and the fact that it just says "soothing," but that's the new packaging. You can see that on the Avene website. This doesn't have the "luxe" feel of some other brands, but this did the job by keeping my skin moisturized and acne free. When I am in the mood to buy something else, I usually buy something else, but this is the best budget option - definitely better than any of the drugstore brands.
