Some of our favorite people and Coffee started with the numbers. Getachew’s career in coffee began as an accountant - a bean counter. After saving up his birr, he was able to purchase some land in Addis Ababa as an investment property. In 2008, amidst a rise in urban real-estate, he sold the property. The proceeds from that sale allowed him to purchase land in Shakisso - and in 2009, he started planting coffee. That was the beginning of Dimtu, Getachew would harvest his own plants - and became a cherry buyer (registered to collect from outgrowers) - and began selling his dried cherry to the ECX.

In 2016 - turning toward specialty, Getachew registered Dimtu PLC, (previous exporting under the more commercially oriented Almaz), now with his own farm, a washing station that he built as well - he was focused on quality coffees from Guji’s highlands.

Frustrated with the speed and quality of dry milling, Getachew built a dry mill - and he’s now able to have agency over his coffee and qualities from cherry, to export. This is the level of detail-orientation and process control that we love - it’s demonstrative of a true commitment to quality. This is why we love the bean counters. Thank you, Getachew - its an honor to be working with a consummate professional.

Thorough But Easily Read Historical Account
Format: Paperback
I bought this book thinking it would be an account of civilian life in the U.S. during WWII. But I was surprised to see that it focused almost exclusively on the military campaigns and the decisions behind them. There was sporadic mention of life on the homefront, but mostly the book is a book about the war. Which is not a criticism. Kennedy deftly and thoroughly takes us through the war, outlines for us the challenges and opportunities and how the leaders of the affected nations developed their strategies. In addtion to the fine details of history, Kennedy writes in such a fashion that this book will probably appeal to the scholar and the layman with equal strength. As someone long in the tooth, I knew most of the history of WWII, but if you are younger and want a comprehensive, well-written history an epic period in world history, you could do a lot worse than read this compelling book.

Scholarly and Readable, Too
Format: Paperback
I read the first volume in this series (about the Great Depression), and now I'm in the midst of this one. Kennedy's very-lucid prose keeps the reader moving along, and of course, the sweep of the story he's telling is nearly-irresistible. But in lamer hands, the prose might well have bogged down in turgidity--not so in this case!
