The Raging Nathans from Dayton, OH is back with their 2nd LP on Rad Girlfriend Records called "Cheap Fame". After several EPs and split 7"s, this release marks their first full-length since 2014. While following in the footsteps of their predecessors, the Nathans pay homage to early Lookout, Epitaph and Fat Wreck bands at the same time blazing their own path and forging their own unique sound, always putting the punk before the pop. With these 13 songs, the band provides smart, brutally honest and sometimes-uncomfortable lyrics paired with unmistakably catchy vocal melodies and harmonies. The songs are fast and emotional touching on familiar and relatable topics such as love, loss, death and abuse. The Raging Nathans have managed to create an inspired album that piques interest, evokes thoughts and emotion and brings a fresh sound to punk rock. For fans of Face to Face, Screeching Weasel, Insomniac-era Green Day and The Queers. "Cheap Fame" was recorded by Matt Yonker (Teen Idols) in Nashville, TN and mastered by Chris Fogal (The Gamits). The art was done by iconic collage-artist Winston Smith (Green Day, Dead Kennedys)

Thorough But Easily Read Historical Account
Format: Paperback
I bought this book thinking it would be an account of civilian life in the U.S. during WWII. But I was surprised to see that it focused almost exclusively on the military campaigns and the decisions behind them. There was sporadic mention of life on the homefront, but mostly the book is a book about the war. Which is not a criticism. Kennedy deftly and thoroughly takes us through the war, outlines for us the challenges and opportunities and how the leaders of the affected nations developed their strategies. In addtion to the fine details of history, Kennedy writes in such a fashion that this book will probably appeal to the scholar and the layman with equal strength. As someone long in the tooth, I knew most of the history of WWII, but if you are younger and want a comprehensive, well-written history an epic period in world history, you could do a lot worse than read this compelling book.

A wonderful telling of history.

A wonderful telling of history by an enjoyable author. It isn't light reading per se but if you want a read that will enhance your understanding of the American people this is a good book.

Scholarly and Readable, Too
Format: Paperback
I read the first volume in this series (about the Great Depression), and now I'm in the midst of this one. Kennedy's very-lucid prose keeps the reader moving along, and of course, the sweep of the story he's telling is nearly-irresistible. But in lamer hands, the prose might well have bogged down in turgidity--not so in this case!
