"This is Your Life", the new album from anthemic rock trio, Augustines, is an urgent, resonant wakeup call, taking stock of where we are now and what the future holds... an open road ahead. The band's revelatory debut single demands from it's audience: Are we alive? Or are we just kidding ourselves? These were two questions that Augustines had swirling around their minds when they set off in the deep winter of 2015 to begin writing songs for their third album, "This Is Your Life". Songs birthed from William McCarthy's travels and times spent in Thai Town, Los Angeles; Dublin, Ireland; and Devon, England. Birthed from Eric Sanderson's experiences rooted down in his Brooklyn studio near the waterfront. Much of it was projection - a flashback to one of the many faces seen on the road with the band, or on one of McCarthy's many cross-country motorcycle pilgrimages. Putting himself in the shoes of those people and writing a way out of the blues. While the road does get lonely, he saw hope there as well. Everyone weaves in and out of being an outsider in their lifetime. Augustines albums are not frivolous affairs. They make big, heart-wrenching sounds, music hewn from granite, from the very ground we stand on, the subject matter urgent and vital. Their debut in 2011, "Rise Ye Sunken Ships" was born from tragedy, the 2009 suicide of McCarthy's brother. The songs had been largely sketched in McCarthy and multi-instrumentalist Eric Sanderson's previous group, Pela, and while that project had been unable to withstand the blow of his death, the songs were too strong to disappear. And so they were reborn in Augustines, with drummer Rob Allen (the rock of the band) completing the magic number. The eponymously titled album that followed in 2014 drew strength from the incredible reaction to "Ships" at festivals and on tour. It concerned itself with plotting a course away from tragedy. How do you rebuild? Like this. "The debut album was a concept record about the fragility of family while passing through the tribulations of America," says McCarthy. "The second one was about moving forward from that. This one has a lot of themes about isolation and battling loneliness. Tackling that shit head on." Recorded in New York, Los Angeles and Bridgeport, CT, with Joe Chiccarelli and long-time associate Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Frightened Rabbit) and featuring amazing Senegalese vocalists Pape and Cheikh on the beautiful "May You Keep Well" and "Running In Place", "This Is Your Life" revels in a sense of realization. The thesis is in the title: "it's a battle cry," says McCarthy. "This Is Your Life. We're here, now, and this is it, buddy. You're alive. I know it's a grind but you can do anything. Being alive is amazing. And it's not forever. What are we going to do?" "This Is Your Life" sees Augustines experimenting and traveling down new roads. Drummer Rob Allen elaborates: "we wanted to spread our wings a little bit on this record. We had in the past flirted with samples and what-not, but never really on the percussive side. We had great fun messing and experimenting with older analog instruments like 808's and 909's as well as more modern instrumentation, like the Roland Spd-SX and Maschine. For me it's clear. This record shows we've tried to grow as musicians and not stay in our comfort zone. To grow as people. To improve" For Augustines, it seems clear what they're going to do: grow, soar. Their second album cycle ended with 3,300 ecstatic fans claiming the band to their hearts at a sold-out Roundhouse show in London. "A pinnacle moment," says McCarthy. But rather than a pinnacle, the monumental songs of "This Is Your Life" suggest that in many ways, that was only the beginning. The horizon has their name etched high and wide into it.

Great Read!!! Great story!!!
Format: Kindle
The series is long, but Ms. Wolfhart does a fantastic job of weaving this tale while bringing so much to the characters. Surprises and plot twists along the way to keep you intrigued. There is some graphic sex, but is no way the focal point. Grammar was excellent (a rare find with a lot of self publishers) with only a few noted errors. I rarely give 4 stars, let alone 5.

Sadly, DNF
Format: Kindle
I read this thru KU. I LOVED the synopsis. And then I began reading... and it was a DNF at 68% after picking it up and putting it down several times because I really loved the main female character.
*****SPOILERS*****
Pros:
The world is unique, intriguing and fun. The primary female character is bad-a** but not a b*tech or a mary sue. The primary female has depth. I really want to know what happens to her even tho it's been weeks and I don't remember her name. The villains to the point I read are pretty good -- an ever present threat of mysterious and possibly many culprits.
Cons:
Way, way too many points of view. I stopped counting at 7. It's the prime reason why I don't care about most of the characters or remember their names even when I like them. There's just too many points of view so almost none of the characters have enough book space for the author to properly develop them. This literally killed the book for me. Actually it killed my desire to read. For weeks.
The main male is more villain than hero. He agreed to marry the main female then locks her up & eschews her for her sister, all while bad mouthing her as unfit to rule when he never spent any time with her getting to know her. He is actually unfit to rule as he is blind to the woes of his own kingdom and starts off a peace mission to secure a ceasefire through marriage by murdering an inn full of people in her country for no real reason. Plus, he constantly makes promises he does not keep. And it's gross of him to pine for the sister behind the main female's back.
*****
As much as I really wanted to see what happened to the main female character, it wasn't enough for me to keep trying to slog thru this book. There was a lot of potential here that just fell short.
Hence, 3 stars.

Fae Courts with High Intrigue
Format: Kindle
This book is one that just builds and builds and then surprises you to no end. You may think you know the villains and then you are jolted in another direction. Princess Reyna is a real gem, strong of character, a fierce fighter, and loyal to her family and kingdom. Just when you think she and Lorcan, well you know, the plot is flipped. Can't wait to see where this goes in book two.

Slow, sorry but good
Format: Kindle
This was a slow moving book. Lots of character pov chapters, lots of superfluous descriptions and endless courtly appearances stalled this book to start. Once you get into the heart of the story, it takes off. Before you know it the book is done. My favorite character is Reyna. She is so strong. She is true to herself. She gets into a lot of trouble with her headstrong ways but it's entertaining. I have high hopes for Lorcan. He is honorable to a fault. Thane had turned out to be better than I thought but i still don't like him. Eislin is useless. Great plot twists at the end. I'm looking forward too book 2.

Very detailed! Beautiful world building! Strong Heroine!
Format: Kindle
Starts off a little slow and confusing with different POV’s, but starts to all come together towards the middle to make an elaborate plot line and makes it all worth it. Beautiful world building and attention to detail as well as great writing. The cliffhanger was gut wrenching! Can’t wait for the next book!
