Do you dare enter the Spill Zone? The first volume of this dystopian graphic novel duology by science fiction visionary Scott Westerfeld and artist Alex Puvilland is now in paperback

Three years ago an event destroyed the small city of Poughkeepsie, forever changing reality within its borders. Uncanny manifestations and lethal dangers now await anyone who enters the Spill Zone.

The Spill claimed Addison's parents and scarred her little sister, Lexa, who hasn't spoken since. Addison provides for her sister by photographing the Zone's twisted attractions on illicit midnight rides. Art collectors pay top dollar for these bizarre images, but getting close enough for the perfect shot can mean death--or worse.

When an eccentric collector makes a million-dollar offer, Addison breaks her own hard-learned rules of survival and ventures farther than she has ever dared. Within the Spill Zone, Hell awaits--and it seems to be calling Addison's name.

Find out what happens in Spill Zone. And don't miss the sequel, Spill Zone: The Broken Vow.

This is a stunning graphic novel written by the author of the Uglies series, the Leviathan and Midnighters trilogies, as well as So Yesterday, Peeps, and The Last Days. This book is printed in stunning full color, with art by Alex Puvilland and colors by Hilary Sycamore. The trade paperback edition includes a 21-page bonus comic.

Praise for Spill Zone

"Addison is particularly complex: though she is sympathetic, her decisions are intentionally presented as morally questionable. Harsh profanity and violence make this a more appropriate choice for mature readers. This unnerving, gripping title--Westerfeld's first original graphic novel--is bound to entice older comics fans, especially those interested in darker sci-fi and nuanced characterization. . . . A must-have for teen and graphic novel collections." --Kirkus Reviews

"Fascinating and hard to forget." --Publishers Weekly

"A little dark, a little twisted, and completely enthralling." --Marissa Meyer, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of The Lunar Chronicles and Heartless

"Amazing." --io9

"Expect some stunning sci-fi spectacle when Addison ventures into the Spill Zone." --A.V. Club

"Readers will have no problem rooting for Addison--and fearing for her. . . . As frightening as Spill Zone can be, though, its greatest asset is its muscle tensing suspense. Reading it feels like binge-watching a great cable series, complete with the same feeling of despair you get when you finish the final episode and realize you've got . . . to wait for the next season." --The New York Times

"Puvilland, an animator for DreamWorks, has a rough, kinetic style that brings to life the rough, kinetic world of Spill Zone. . . . Westerfeld does not overburden the story with unnecessary dialogue or narration. He deftly joins the ranks of other established YA authors like M. T. Anderson and Marissa Meyer who, as of late, have taken a break from prose to produce comics." --The New York Review of Books

"If Katniss Everdeen's your gal, you're going to want to meet Addison Merrit, another teen trying to make the best of her dystopic surroundings." --Entertainment Weekly

"Spill Zone is an absolute must read. It's a brilliant work of art that is easily one of this year's best comics. Engaging, exciting, and mysterious, this comic will consume you." --Nerdist

"YA superstar Scott 'Uglies' Westerfeld and artist Alex Puvilland tell the spooky, action-packed tale of Addison, one of the few survivors of the mysterious events that destroyed Poughkeepsie, New York, turning it into a spooky, Night-Vale-ish place where mutant animals, floating living corpses, and people trapped in two-dimensional planes live amid strange permanent winds that create funnels of old electronics and medical waste." --Boing Boing

Almost perfect...upraised logo should be left off
This toy is great for relentless chewers with strong jaws! It would be almost perfect if it didn't have a "K9" logo in raised rubber on it. That is the place that my aggressive chewer shepherd/bulldog mix focuses on and is able to get small chunks off. Without that logo, he would chew the ball more evenly, instead of fixating on that one spot. He loves this ball and has chewed on it for about an hour off & on each of the 11 days he has had it. Although it is very durable so far, the flaw is the upraised logo.

Perfect for High-Drive Dogs & Surprisingly Durable (six month review)
I use this ring ball for structured fetch and tug sessions with my high-drive German Shepherd mix (91 lbs. at 10 mon.), and it’s easily the best toy we’ve added to our routine. What makes it truly exceptional is how it allows my dog to engage in the full canine predatory sequence: • Chase: He locks in visually and bolts after the ring when I throw it. • Grab & Hold: He brings it back, pins it against my leg, and bites down firmly (the toy—not the leg!)—his way of acting out the natural catch-and-control behavior. • Unalive & Tug: We finish with a strong tug session, which satisfies his instinct to grip and shake—basically his version of “making the toy unalive.” • Settle & Chew: Afterward, he relaxes with a chew toy or eats—completing the full physical and mental cycle in a healthy, balanced way. Durability is outstanding—this toy stands up to intense tug sessions with no tearing or damage, even with a 91 lb powerhouse. My senior dog also joins in for double tug play, and it holds up beautifully to that too. I don’t leave this toy down for chewing—it’s not a chew toy. I use it specifically for fetch and tug, then put it away when we’re done. This keeps it exciting and extends its lifespan. My dog has other chew toys he can use freely throughout the day. This isn’t just another fetch toy—when thoughtful it provides a structured, instinct-satisfying experience that’s mentally enriching and physically engaging. If you have a high-drive or working breed, or a dog who thrives on interactive play, this ring ball is 100% worth it.

Unpredictable bounces
Size: Small, Size: Small
My 3-year old Cavapoo loves these little toys, although I haven’t given them to her all at once. Typically, she is able to chew a little hole in anything with a squeaker within hours. The first one I gave her, it took her more than a day to chew off a little ear, but she still love to play with it. The second one is completely intact after more than a week. What both of us like is that the shapes with tiny nubs make the toys bounce unpredictably. They are small and light-weight which makes them easy to throw in the house without doing any damage. I am careful to not throw them at the TV or delicate items. I’ll actually buy them again when she needs more toys. EDIT 3/19/2026: It’s 3.5 months since I first wrote about these toys. Tater is playing with all four critters. It’s a miracle that all of them are intact and squeaking! Even the one with an ear missing squeaks as long as I cover the little hole. I just added all of the Chiwawa toys to favorites so I can find them again—if or when these ever wear out.

Fun Bath Toy - Loud Squeaker
Size: Small
My dog loves these little squeaky toys. The squeaker is loud and the toy is very durable. She can chew on it and it still looks the same. We love to add them into the bathtub when it’s time for a bath to make her less stressed. She loves to bat them around the house. They roll around pretty well.

Good quality for the price, I’m very happy with this purchase.
Size: Small
They’re slightly smaller than a tennis ball, lightweight, and have a nice bounce. My dog is medium-sized (about 68 lbs) lab mix, and these work great for her. I’ve been looking for a toy like this for a long time. It’s made of soft rubber/silicone and squeaks with very little pressure, which is perfect for my dog. She loves to gently carry toys around the house and yard, and most squeaky toys require too much force. These are easy for her to squeak and just the right size to carry.
