The tender memoir of the forty-three years Siri Hustvedt spent with her husband, writer, poet and filmmaker Paul Auster - from their first encounter in 1980s New York through the highs and lows of love, family and griefOne of the most anticipated books of 2026 for the Guardian, Observer and BBC Culture'A remarkable achievement' LOUISE KENNEDY'A deeply moving memoir, raw with loss, yet luminous with love' SARAH WATERS'What a kind, honest book. What a gift of love' DAVID MITCHELL'Essential reading from an all-time great' SARA COLLINSGhost Stories is Siri Hustvedt's most personal work yet, a searing and intimate meditation on grief, memory and enduring love, written in the aftermath of the death of her husband, writer, poet and filmmaker Paul Auster.

It is a patchwork-quilt book that stitches together memories from over forty years of love and life together: journal entries Siri wrote between November 2023 and 3 May 2024, the day of Paul's funeral; emails Siri sent to friends during his cancer treatment; notes Paul sent her over the course of their relationship; and three love letters Siri wrote to him in 1981, when he left her for a period of nine or ten days to return to his former life with his first wife and son.

The book also contains Paul Auster's last ever piece of writing - the first thirty-five pages of what he hoped would be a small book of letters to Siri's and his grandson, Miles Auster Hustvedt Ostrander, born on 1 January 2024.

Unflinching, tender and wise, this is the full-bodied story of Siri Hustvedt and Paul Auster's life together, an exploration of how grief unmoors time and how the intimacy of a shared life continues to mark the everyday. A note from Siri'I began writing Ghost Stories shortly after my husband, Paul Auster, died on April 30th 2024. My meditations on Paul's cancer, his death, my grief, the potent feeling I had of his presence on the day he was buried, and my memories from the years we spent together are interwoven with several texts that were written before he died: twelve letters I wrote to friends during his cancer treatment; journal entries I wrote between early November, 2023 and May 3, 2024; and three love letters I wrote to Paul in 1981, when he left me for a period of nine or ten days to return to his former life. Although I knew Paul had saved those letters, I hadn't read them since they were written and had only a foggy recollection of their content. In the last month of his life, Paul began writing what he hoped would be a small book of letters to our grandson, Miles Auster Hustvedt Ostrander, who was born on January 1st, 2024. Paul was too weak to finish it as planned, but the thirty-five pages he did manage to write are interwoven in this book. I want to stress that Paul's text is not an appendix to mine but an integral part of the book as a whole. Because the memoir turns on attachment, betweenness, and dialogue, all crucial to the love affair that lasted forty-three years, the insertion of one author's text into another's, is, in this case, essential to the memoir's overall meaning.'Praise for Siri Hustvedt'Hustvedt is that rare artist, a writer of high intelligence, profound sensuality and a less easily definable capacity for which the only word I can find is wisdom'Salman Rushdie'It is Hustvedt's gift to write with exemplary clarity of what is by necessity unclear'Hilary Mantel'She's a twenty-first-century Virginia Woolf, with many intellectual and creative rooms of her own'Literary Review

Relatable and H O T
Format: Kindle
This story is so well-written with excellent back stories for the main characters, the relatable religious trauma vibes, and the anxieties of trusting someone after being burned too many times. Also, the sex scenes are extremely hot without being ridiculous.

Sweet Romance
Format: Paperback
This was a sweet love story between two women who are both dealing with some baggage, and figuring out what moving forward looks like. I enjoyed both of the characters and their chemistry. Also really enjoyed the supporting characters, including the animals. Listening to the audiobook, there were some moments where I had to stop and figure out which character was narrating because the voices didn’t sound distinct enough. This only happened a few times, and probably wouldn’t have occurred if I’d been reading the physical copy. Overall, a sweet and enjoyable romance with some depth and great side characters.

Adorable!
Format: Paperback
This book was completely adorable. I loved Thea and Courtney’s story, and the background from the unlikely animal friends to Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice references. Whilst a little turbulent at times with traumatic backstories, I’m glad they got their GHEA, and I loved their journey, and secondary and tertiary characters along the way. It made me smile when I was in a place of exhaustion, so I really loved it.

Not great but not bad!
Format: Audiobook
I loved the audio and I'm so glad there were two narrators! I really loved the deconstruction rep in this book. It spoke to me in ways that felt real and authentic. I also liked the way the migraine/chronic illness was handled as well. The reason this is a 3 star to me is that I can't remember the characters names and I just finished this book. The first 50% was pretty forgettable. It was hard for me to get into that first half. The second half however, I really enjoyed! Courtney and Thea (yes I did just have to look up their names) could have used more fleshing out. Courtney's ex's threats felt like a nothing burger in the end and Courtney's running also didn't hit quite like I wish it had. The last 50% things finally get moving. These characters finally start sharing with each other and being open and vulnerable but there is still a big secret that get revealed that throws a wrench into the whole thing. Overall I did enjoy it!

Four and a half stars for this sapphic romance
Format: Paperback
I’m giving this book four and a half stars. There was a lot I really loved about it. The banter between the main characters is lovely, and there were several scenes that are just adorable. They’re complex characters though with their flaws and histories. They have depth. And how they react in a situation isn’t how you might react, but it’s right for that character. It felt truthful and in many ways relatable. I’ve got enough religious trauma that I can definitely relate, and although I’ve never been a catholic, I have what I think of as catholic guilt…in that I feel guilty for cutting my family out of my life despite the death threats, hateful comments, and constant hit my self esteem and mental health takes. I can even understand hiding physical health issues, because people definitely do treat you differently, also there’s trauma that goes back there too. I loved the play of the word stars used in the title, and how it fits both main characters so well. It’s super clever. I know some people were disappointed at this story, and I have to say that it left me going into the book feeling down about it, but instead I really enjoyed it (minus the breakup/not breakup). The ending was incredibly satisfying for me.
