Among contemporary Russian writers, Yuz Aleshkovsky stands out for his vivid imagination, his mixing of realism and fantasy, and his virtuosic use of the rich tradition of Russian obscene language. These two novels, written in the 1970s, display Aleshkovsky's linguistic gifts and keen observations of Soviet life. Nikolai Nikolaevich begins when its titular hero, a pickpocket by trade, is released from prison after World War II and finds a job in a Moscow biological laboratory. Starting out as a kind of janitor, he is soon recruited to provide sperm for strange experiments intended to create life in the Andromeda galaxy. The hero finds himself at the center of the 1948 purge of biological science in the Soviet Union, in a transgressive tale that joins science fiction (and science fact) with gulag slang and a love story. The protagonist and narrator of Camouflage is an alcoholic who claims that he and his gang of friends are just one part of a vast camouflaging operation organized by the Party to hide the Soviet Union's underground military-industrial complex from the CIA's spy satellites. As they pass their time on the streets and share their alcohol-inspired fantasies, they see the stark reality of the Cold War in Russia in the late seventies. Nikolai Nikolaevich and Camouflage introduces English-speaking readers to a master of the comic first-person narrative.Binding Type: Paperback

These shoes are very comfortable and stylish. The quality feels great, and they fit perfectly. I can wear them for a long time without discomfort. They look elegant with both casual and dress clothes. Definitely worth the price and I would recommend them to others. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Great Shoe
Size: 10.5 Wide, Color: Black Leather/Black
Great shoe! Especially for those that are on the move in a professional setting for a lot of the day. The only issue I’ve had with these so far are my shoe laces are warping. The shoe itself is holding up great.

A great purchase
Size: 10.5, Color: British Tan/Ivory
These shoes are very comfortable and attractive. Lots of people noticed them when I first wore them. I would not consider them the most dressy shoes you can buy, but they work for "business casual" and most other outfits (but not shorts).

All-Day Comfort for 10+ Hour Workdays. Finally Found a Pair That Holds Up
Size: 12, Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 12, Color: Black Leather/Black
After years of trying different “comfortable” dress shoes, this is the first pair I’ve owned that I can wear for a full 10+ hour workday without counting down the minutes to take them off.
For context, I’m a retail district manager. I’m on my feet most of the day walking stores, standing in conversations, moving constantly. I’ve owned Clarks, Rockport, and even higher-end dress shoes, and while some started out comfortable, none of them held up for an entire day without foot fatigue setting in.
These Cole Haan shoes are different.
What stands out:
All-day comfort: No mid-day foot pain, even after long shifts.
Solid construction: Genuine leather that takes and holds a polish well.
Supportive sole: Noticeably helps with impact from constant walking.
Great value: Performs better than shoes I’ve paid significantly more for.
I also appreciate that they hit a nice middle ground stylistically; more business casual than formal, but still sharp enough for most professional environments.
For additional context, I am a heavier individual and tend to wear down the outer (lateral) edge of my shoes first. That pattern holds true here as well.
The only drawback:
After about two months of wearing them 5 days a week (purchased January 7th), the sole shows more wear than I would expect at this point. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s the reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5. I’ll be including a comparison photo between the worn pair and a new pair for reference.
That said, I still expect to get around 8–10 months of use out of them, which at this price point is more than fair.
Bottom line:
If you need a comfortable, reliable, and reasonably priced work shoe for long days on your feet, these outperform just about everything else I’ve tried, and that’s why I bought a second pair.
