This is a book of transcriptions of the toques (rhythms) and cantos (songs) from the Grupo Ilu A–u recording entitled Sacred Rhythms (1995). The performances on this CD are derived from the Afro- Cuban religious music of the Lukum’ tradition of Cuba. Though popularly known as Santeria, this religion is more correctly referred to as La Regla de Ocha and has been practiced in various forms on the island since the mid-19th century. Within the vast array of artistic expressions in the religion, music is arguably the most significant and important. This book consists of transcriptions of seven tracks of songs and percussion from this musical world. Although these performances represent a fraction of the entire liturgical repertoire, they nevertheless impeccably document the musical style of the Havana ÒbranchÓ of the religion at the end of the 20th century.
