But if you don't it is a pain to screw those in with the tools provided. On the upside, they do come with a mini leveler. But it's just not a practical way of screwing in the shelf unless you are prepared to spend a surprising amount of time doing it. The shelves themselves are sturdy but that should be expected since it's basically a sheet of metal.
