Deze be•nvloeding heet interferentie. Interferentie kan tussen apparaten van de installatie zelf voorkomen of tussen apparaten van de installatie en systemen in de omgeving.
Het vakgebied, dat deze verschijnselen beschrijft en middelen aangeeft om interferentie te voorkomen of te bestrijden, heet ElektroMagnetische Compatibiliteit of kortweg EMC.
Het nemen van EMC-maatregelen om interferentie van de installatie te voorkomen is niet voldoende. Daarnaast moet aan EMC-eisen voldaan worden om aan de wettelijke bepalingen te voldoen. Deze zijn in de EMC-richtlijn vastgelegd.
