The cleaver-style skinner traces its roots to the heavy working blades carried by frontiersmen, trappers, and butchers who needed one tool that could chop, skin, and process game in the field. Its wide belly and forward-weighted profile were born out of necessity a blade that could power through hide, joint, and bone without switching tools. Over time this rugged form earned its place as a trusted companion for anyone working far from the comforts of a kitchen.

As outdoor culture grew, makers refined the cleaver-skinner into a precise hunting tool, pairing carbon steel blades with full-tang construction for maximum strength and balance. The sweeping curved edge became prized for clean skinning strokes, while the broad blade kept its chopping power. This knife carries that working heritage forward — a modern, hand-forged take on a blade shape built for real work in the wild.

Introduction

This handmade Cleaver Skinner Knife is built for hunters and outdoorsmen who want one blade that does it all. Forged from solid carbon steel and ground into a wide, sweeping skinning belly, it delivers controlled cutting power and clean strokes in the field. The full-tang construction runs the entire length of the knife, giving it the strength and balance to handle hard, repeated use without flex or failure.

It belongs to our hunting knives collection, where every blade is shaped, ground, and finished by hand. The skeletonized black Micarta handle keeps weight low while locking your grip in place, wet or dry. Whether you're skinning game, breaking down camp, or processing meat, this cleaver skinner is ready to work straight out of the sheath.

Blade

The 7-inch blade is forged from high-carbon steel, prized for its toughness, easy field sharpening, and excellent edge retention under hard use. Its wide cleaver-style profile with a deep, sweeping belly is purpose-built for skinning and slicing, while the upswept tip gives precise control for detail work. With enough mass to chop and enough curve to skin, it bridges heavy and fine cutting tasks in a single blade.

Handle

The 5-inch handle is crafted from durable black Micarta a layered composite known for its strength, moisture resistance, and rock-solid grip in any weather. Its skeletonized full-tang design cuts weight and improves balance while keeping the blade's strength running end to end. Secured with sturdy fasteners, the handle stays comfortable and locked-in through demanding hunting and camp work, season after season.

Leather Sheath

This knife ships with a hand-stitched genuine leather sheath, fitted to the blade's wide profile for secure, protected carry. The leather shields the carbon steel edge from moisture and impact while keeping the knife at your side and ready in the field. Built to last as long as the blade, it makes the cleaver skinner easy and safe to transport on every trip.

Uses

This cleaver skinner is a true field workhorse: skinning and processing game, slicing and portioning meat, chopping through camp tasks, and general bushcraft and outdoor work. Its broad belly excels at hide work, while the carbon steel edge holds up to repeated heavy use. It's a dependable choice for hunters, campers, and survivalists. For a similar heavy-duty build, the Carbon Steel Tracker Knife offers another rugged hunting and camping option.

Care Instructions ✅

Carbon steel needs simple, regular care to perform for a lifetime. Hand-wash and dry the blade immediately after every use never leave it wet or put it in a dishwasher. Apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil or blade oil after cleaning to guard against rust and patina. Store the knife in its leather sheath away from humidity, and touch up the edge on a whetstone or honing rod when needed.

FAQs

What is the overall length and blade size of this cleaver skinner knife?
This knife measures 12 inches overall, with a 7-inch carbon steel blade and a 5-inch black Micarta handle. The balanced proportions give it real chopping and skinning power while staying controllable for detailed field work and meat processing.

Is the black Micarta handle strong enough for heavy-duty chopping tasks?
Yes. Micarta is a layered composite valued for its toughness, moisture resistance, and reliable grip in any conditions. Combined with the full-tang construction running end to end, the handle easily withstands repeated heavy chopping, skinning, and camp use without weakening.

Does this full tang carbon steel skinner knife include a leather sheath?
Yes. Every knife ships with a hand-stitched genuine leather sheath fitted to the blade's wide profile. It protects the carbon steel edge from moisture and impact while keeping the knife secure and ready to carry safely on every hunt or outdoor trip.

How do I clean and oil a carbon steel blade to prevent rust over time?
Hand-wash and dry the blade right after use, then apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil. Store it in the leather sheath away from humidity. Avoid dishwashers and prolonged moisture, as carbon steel can develop rust or patina if left wet or unprotected.

Is this cleaver skinner knife better for hunting, skinning, or camp work?
It's built to handle all three. The wide sweeping belly excels at skinning and processing game, the blade mass powers through chopping and camp tasks, and the carbon steel edge holds up to hard use making it a versatile all-in-one field and hunting blade.

How to take back what the thief has stolen
Format: Paperback
I took a long time to read this book so I could soak in and apply the principles laid out from God's Word. We have all been stolen from in some way or another, whether it has been failed relationships, finances, health, or even what we feel is our calling or destiny. The good news is that we can stand on God's Word and take back what the thief has stolen. I am still applying what I have learned to have faith that God will restore the years that the locusts have eaten

A penetrating discussion of important books by Black authors.
Format: Kindle
Atcho’s choice of texts is smart: each has survived many decades in print, fascinates modern readers, and probes profound and current themes. Most are well known. Each one is worth your while to read or reread. Fiction, in particular, makes the Black experience in our country accessible to others. Living inside the head of Bigger Thomas (Native Son) offers a more personal understanding than any essay can. The church has always been part of the story, and Atcho does justice to this by examining African-American literature in a theological light. He is sensitive to what each text is saying on a spiritual level, discerning the subtext and bringing it to light. Over and over, as I read his analyses, I had the experience of seeing more clearly what I had only vaguely intuited. The readings he discusses are not one-dimensional or didactic, and I found having a Virgil at my side was invaluable. This book is a gift to us all.

Our church read this book together, and I can't recommend enough that your church do the same!
Format: Paperback
I am so grateful to Claude Atcho for inextricably weaving together a spacious reformed theology with the heights and depths of great African American literature. Thanks to his gracious, nuanced, and substantive guidance, I can no longer separate the two. For example, I will no longer be able to read the Exodus account of liberation without imagining Zora Neale Hurston's "Moses, Man of the Mountain." Where the themes of great African American literature (and indeed, great theology) do not short-cut suffering, death, lament, and evil, Atcho manages to do this heavy lifting in a way that welcomes uninitiated readers like me. Our church read this book together, and I can't recommend enough that your church do the same!

Eye-Opening and Heart-Expanding
Format: Paperback
I am incredibly grateful for this book. It gave me profound insight into essential truths of Christian faith and doctrine by allowing me to see them through a radically different lens than my internal lens. Plus, it opened me up enormously to the experience of black Americans who express the pain and challenge of life in our country thoughtfully and provocatively. I left this reading chastened, desiring more conversation, moved to listen better, and hoping to live differently.
