Christmas in a Jugular VeinAuthor David Benjamin has always been fascinated by Christmasand by Christmas stories, starting with the Book of Luke. But the holiday tale that tickled Benjamins literary fancy was Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol, a story which, Benjamin believes, opened the door to countless variations on holiday themes, from Scrooge to Kris Kringle to the Grinch and beyond. Author David Benjamin has always been fascinated by Christmas—and by Christmas stories, starting with the Book of Luke. But the holiday tale that tickled Benjamin’s literary fancy was Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” a story which, Benjamin believes, opened the door to countless variations on holiday themes, from Scrooge to Kris Kringle to the Grinch and beyond.

“Beyond” is where Benjamin began to venture with his first Christmas story, “The Little Red Dot,” written when he was sixteen and published (in a slightly censored form) in his high-school newspaper’s holiday edition.

Since then, said Benjamin, “I’ve tried to compose a new Christmas story every year. During my tenure as editor of the Mansfield (Mass.) News, I contrived to fill our fat holiday issue with Christmas stories written by kids in every grade of the Mansfield schools. The results were a joy to the world.

Christmas in a Jugular Vein compiles 38 of Benjamin’s wildly variant and slightly transgressive holiday tales and poems. Among the contents of this sometimes startling, often humorous and occasionally poignant anthology:

• Eight dramas set in Bethlehem on or around 25 December 0000 AD, with all the familiar players and a few surprises, including a fat old man in a red suit, the “Fourth King” and the “Fourth Ghost,” a Roman centurion named Marcus Suspicius, a skeptical shepherd and a pushy but prescient yuletide impresario named Izzy Glick

• An email from the Parkers, who’ve been imprisoned through Christmas in their “smart home” and its electronic system, the Acme “Total Home Interactive Networking Grid” (THING)

• Parodies and take-offs after the style of Dickens (of course), Clement Moore, Lewis Carroll (“Santawocky”) and Robert Service

• The further adventures of Murray Lefkowitz, the drunk Santa kicked out of the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade by Maureen O’Hara in Miracle on 34th Street

• The holiday depredations of George the cat

• Several of Benjamin’s personal essays about the joys and miseries of Christmas

• And hey, what’s Christmas without a zombie or two—or lots of ’em?

Nick Chiarkas, author of the award-winning novel Nunzio’s Way, said, “This is a captivating, often irreverent, peek into the heart and creative mind of a master storyteller. Benjamin had me hooked with the first story, ‘The Little Red Dot.’ I continued turning pages to the end of the collection, chuckling at times and gasping occasionally.

“A chuckle, a gasp, but always entertained. The author’s clever insights are woven throughout the collection. You will not want to stop reading Christmas in a Jugular Vein until the very end, and then, you will return to it from time to time.”

Where the Wildflowers Grow and this book was such an emotional journey. What started as a survival story slowly turned into a story about healing, identity, forgiveness, and learning how to live again after trauma. Leandra endured more pain than most people could imagine. Losing her family, spending five years in prison, and surviving the prison transport bus crash would have been enough to completely harden her. Instead, watching her reinvent herself as Leigh and slowly rediscover who she was outside of survival mode made this story feel deeply human and realistic. I really loved the symbolism of the flower farm and how Jackson became a safe place for her without trying to “fix” her. Their relationship felt patient, healing, and genuine. The romance never overshadowed Leigh’s personal growth, which I appreciated. This book truly explored what it means to be loved properly while still carrying scars from your past. What kept me invested the entire time was the tension hanging over everything. Even during the peaceful moments, you knew the secrets surrounding Leigh’s past would eventually surface. And when the truth finally came out, the consequences were emotional and impactful instead of feeling overly dramatic.

Fantastic Book!
Format: Paperback
“This book is such an amazing, thought-provoking, raw, and beautifully written novel. I thoroughly enjoyed every page and truly could not put it down. The characters came alive in such a vivid and unforgettable way that I was genuinely sad when the story ended, and I cried so much at the end. It pulled at my heartstrings in the most beautiful, poignant, and emotionally honest way. A truly unforgettable read.”

emotionally rich but overly long.
Format: Kindle
Where the wildflowers grow has some generally moving moments, especially around grief, healing, and found family. The flower farm setting is comforting, and Leigh’s trauma feels authentic. However, the pacing is slow in the middle. Some of the plot twist are fairly predictable. I felt the love between Leigh and Jackson was moving, and I felt her healing with Tibbs and Luke was very emotional. The book lies heavily into melancholy, but I I’m glad that I read it. I didn’t feel like it was a complete waste of time. I just wish it was maybe a little shorter.

This book was really good, it's definitely a love story, I enjoyed the story line. It definitely took a while for it to come out, but I had my suspicions along the way. It's a long book but it was a quick read for me.

A Beautiful Story of Healing and Hope
Format: Kindle
Where the Wildflowers Grow is a tender and beautifully written story about survival, healing, and unexpected love. Leigh has endured unimaginable loss, and her time on the flower farm becomes the pause her spirit needs. I loved this story as my heart ached at Leigh’s journey. Jackson is a beautiful soul who understands the work of healing and helps her feel seen and alive again. The book is filled with learning nuggets and gentle reminders, including my favorite line: “You are more than the sum of your struggles.” A beautiful reminder that something new can bloom after heartbreak.
