PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST

An epic, riveting history of New York City on the edge of disaster--and an anatomy of the austerity politics that continue to shape the world today

When the news broke in 1975 that New York City was on the brink of fiscal collapse, few believed it was possible. How could the country's largest metropolis fail? How could the capital of the financial world go bankrupt? Yet the city was indeed billions of dollars in the red, with no way to pay back its debts. Bankers and politicians alike seized upon the situation as evidence that social liberalism, which New York famously exemplified, was unworkable. The city had to slash services, freeze wages, and fire thousands of workers, they insisted, or financial apocalypse would ensue.

In this vivid account, historian Kim Phillips-Fein tells the remarkable story of the crisis that engulfed the city. With unions and ordinary citizens refusing to accept retrenchment, the budget crunch became a struggle over the soul of New York, pitting fundamentally opposing visions of the city against each other. Drawing on never-before-used archival sources and interviews with key players in the crisis, Fear City shows how the brush with bankruptcy permanently transformed New York--and reshaped ideas about government across America.

At once a sweeping history of some of the most tumultuous times in New York's past, a gripping narrative of last-minute machinations and backroom deals, and an origin story of the politics of austerity, Fear City is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the resurgent fiscal conservatism of today.

Great for pre-teen or teenager.

Nice gift for my 10 year old. It took abt 1.5 hours to put together for a handy guy. It was small enough to go into the corner of her bedroom. There was no damage to the wood, no missing parts. Will probably last 3, maybe 4 years im assuming. Just what she needs for now at a great price. Would recommend.

Excellent quality

Beautiful vanity. Great quality made of sturdy wood. Looks expensive. Was easy to put together because it had step-by-step instructions. It took me a long time because I did it by myself, but easy. The only thing that did not look nice on it was the silver screws showing on the outside and they just give you little white paper stickers to put over them. Would have been better if the screws and bolts would’ve came colored white to match the vanity. I will paint them white myself, but that’s the only thing that didn’t look nice on it. The rest of it is very nice. Highly recommend for anyone to purchase! My granddaughter will love it!

Beautiful Vanity
Style: White
It’s a very nice and spacious vanity. It definitely took a while to put it together but it was worth it in the end. It comes with everything all the pieces were labeled. I love the mirror and the lights. It comes with three different settings for the lights. It’s definitely worth buying.

long building process
The package came very quickly but the box was very damaged. Thankfully, nothing was broken and all the pieces were in tact but the white styrofoam pieces came out EVERYWHERE! (so be careful and make sure you build in a bigger space). It took over 4 hours with 2 people and the directions were a little confusing, especially when it came to installing the lights around the mirror, but after awhile it all came together. It is not the sturdiest vanity but it’s very nice looking. Only thing I wished for was a +/- dimmer for the light settings!
