HOLLYHOCK 'French' --Malva sylvestra mauritania--AKA "Common Mallow" in Europe, this 4" shrub has glossy, dark green foliage and gorgeous purple veined showy pink flowers. Seeds are called "cheeses" for the similarity of their appearance to cheese wheels and have been used to make dyes. Boiled young leaves were eaten as a vegetable in the 1800s. Full sun to part shade, well drained soil, tolerates poor soil. Deadhead vigilantly to avoid prolific seedlings.
