The historic show was given the retronym 'The Original Series' after its initial running from 1966-1969 to distinguish it from the tidal wave of subsequent adaptations; these include seven TV series, three animated series, and thirteen films (and counting). Before humanity had even landed on the moon, viewers had watched Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) traverse the Milky Way Galaxy with his crew on the 'Starship Enterprise' encountering new planets and civilisations! The subsequent pop culture revolution saw the original series become one of the most successful science fiction television series in history with modern adaptations continuing to be made today.
