The Sun Faded Capsule

One of the things we’ve always loved about vintage is the way garments fade after years of wear in the sun. Sometimes brands recreate that look with chemicals or artificial processes (some of the better ones use lasers which is very Star Trek). Natural dyes naturally fade (or, in some cases, darken (tan)) over time with exposure to the sun, making them more beautiful every day they’re worn. We don’t - we use the sun (also this is a reminder to always wear sunscreen).

The Sun Faded Capsule is a little slice of our R.T.S. line where we pre-fade items a little to get them started. They look gorgeous and vintage but their story isn’t finished. It's on to you to wear and love them to keep developing them. We’re releasing this in batches, and they’re quite time and labour-intensive so grab one if you like it because we aren’t sure when we can get more out in the sun.

CO-200ASF

This dye is a combination of natural indigo and madder - dyed in layers. Natural dyeing isn’t at all like mixing paints - you dont mix Indigo and Madder into purple and then dye with that - that would never work. It's more like creating different colours by shining light through different coloured lenses to create the one you want - we dye a layer of madder, then overdye with a layer (or sometimes layers) of natural indigo and we get this ‘blurple’ effect.

What makes it particularly special is that the two dyes react differently to sunlight. Madder fades taking its red tones down to sherbert-y pinks relatively fast, while the natural indigo strain we use very slowly dulls so you end up with a fabric that goes from a ‘blurple’ to an almost purpley-elephant-grey-blue. At every stage it's ‘the best colour I’ve ever seen’ so it’s understandably everyone’s favourite dye that we do. It is, of course, also the most expensive and hardest to make - drawing upon every drip of expertise from the dyers to get right. We’re all really proud.

To fade them, as you might have guessed, we place them in the sun. It’s an homage to the sun-faded vintage we love. Again, to get this effect anywhere else you’d use chemicals or, in the most up-to-date wash houses, maybe lasers. Nevertheless, we prefer the sun. It will continue to fade and change as you wear and love it, but this gives it a good nudge in a beautiful direction.

Speaking of, when me and Katy were abroad once, we overheard someone in a vegan cafe post-yoga telling some other westerners about the power of walking outside naked in the morning light to “absorb the divine masculine” via your genitals. She was really passionate about it. I don’t think we finished our toast, but that really stuck with me, so in an effort to let go, I’m passing it on to you.

*Each piece features a unique fade, making every piece one of a kind. Fades will vary, and we’re unable to accommodate specific requests.

Like the other one (Vol 1) but different (Vol 2) with more.
Format: Paperback
Volume 2 continues the great color combinations of the 1st Volume, but the combinations are more complex, with more colors. There's even a section of art in the form of paintings, prints, woven work, etc. that you see on one page while on the opposite page is the breakdown of the colorations in bars with no image. What this does is show how the art works, and then how the combinations also work. Also more of the simplified 2 and 3 combinations that I think I prefer as more minimal. Again, these are ranged from light and airy to darkly saturated -and all curiously satisfying and worth study and trying them out. On the computer it's possible to match any tone or hue, so there's a path that only requires finding the right starting color then paying attention to the combination. Not that it's an end-all, but a beginning. Any of those can be shifted or modified with ease but it depends on how they fit a real-time application and not a formula. But the horizons have already been expanded so there's more, and even more.

Great book to help establish a palette for a software, web or art project
Format: Paperback
I love this book for helping me establish a color palette for art projects that I want a Japanese feel to. Also just generally good for getting inspiration for color palettes that just plain look good. I've always, since I can remember from my youth, felt drawn to the Japanese color combinations in kimono. fashion, origami paper and even toys. Maybe it's a consequence of growing up in Hawaii with all the Japanese influences I had -- or, as I suspect, it's just really good color application. This book helps me find the colors I want that go together the way I want. I use the examples in this book with a Color Muse to pick my digital color palette.

Terrific content, soft cover.
Format: Paperback
It is way smaller than expected but it is amazing in content. The only think I do not like is that it has an extremely soft external cover, which worries me on the long run.
