Микола Куліш (1892–1937) літературній діяльності присвятив майже все своє життя — 30 років із 45. Він писав навіть тоді, коли був на Соловках, в ув’язненні. Свою хресну дорогу він пройшов разом із багатьма іншими українськими митцями Розстріляного Відродження. Його розстріляли 3 листопада 1937 року в Сандармоху.

П’єси '97', 'Комуна в степах' і 'Прощай, село' становлять своєрідну трилогію про українське село 1920–1930 років.

Драма '97' — за кількістю загиблих від голоду в одному тільки українському селі — була  написана 1924 року. Автор надіслав п’єсу до Харківського театру ім. І. Франка, де її було вирішено ставити, але зі значним цензуруванням, зокрема, без згадки про справжній голод в Україні. І навіть у такому вигляді вона мала шалений успіх…

До збірки також увійшла п’єса 'Отак загинув Гуска', автобіографія письменника й уривки 'Із записника'.
