Місце дії роману не має конкретних географічних реалій, бо вбирає в себе весь світ. Головний герой, опинившись у чужому йому середовищі, намагається порозумітися з тими, від кого тепер залежить його доля. Історія героя нагадує перипетії долі самого автора і так само трагічно передає самотність і безпорадність людини в її протистоянні жорстокості й абсурдності життя.
