This oil painting with silver leaf detailing of a Harris Leather western saddle is painted on an 8x10" cradled panel. The "Phil Harris" signature on the fender was pretty tricky to paint. I used a detail brush to apply the adhesive the silver leaf sticks to. Then I used an exacto knife to scrape away some of the silver in order to get the tiny details just right. I only used a little bit of paint to suggest deep shadows and patterns on the silver leaf. The highlights and mid-tones are created when light reflects off the silver leaf. This painting is truly unique because it changes throughout the day based upon the light reflecting off its surface. 6 hours and 45 minutes went into creating this painting.

Was it brought along to horse shows? Maybe a little girl struggled to throw it over a school pony's back every Wednesday after school. Only the saddle's owner knows what life it's encountered; but even then, a saddle has secret memories we can only speculate through its stains and wrinkles.
