Every day, the fishing guides bring their clients back to the dock in front of Sonora Lodge to clean their fish after the photo sessions. All the time, the routine is being observed by the ever-watchful eyes of an eagle that sits at the top of a cedar tree above our room. The eagle waits patiently for the cleaning of the fish and boldly swoops down to recover the tasty morsels that are thrown overboard. This is very exciting, and for some, it’s the closest they have ever been to these beautiful birds.

The eagle plays a significant role in the legends and totems of the people of the Northwest. My crest is Eagle, and I carry the name of an eagle, which translates to Eagle Rock. There is an older totem not far from our door that has an eagle at the top, which stares northward to Bute Inlet and was carved by a member of the Henderson family. I noticed the sculpture upon our arrival at this breathtaking resort.

One day, as people were cleaning fish, I saw the eagle sitting above, waiting for a meal. I quickly circled around and lined the totem up with the eagle and distant mountains; the result was a striking image that inspired Eagle Totem.
