Crafted in Seattle, Washington, Westland Garryana 9th Edition continues the distillery’s bold exploration of Pacific Northwest terroir through the rare Quercus garryana oak. This species, indigenous to the region, lends a distinct intensity and depth to the whiskey, setting it apart from conventional American single malts. The ninth edition showcases a maturation that balances tradition and innovation, resting at least five years in a mix of Garry Oak, first-fill ex-bourbon, and ex-Oloroso sherry casks.

The nose reveals a smoky sweetness of burnt marshmallow layered with mocha and almond cream, while biscuit notes add a warm, comforting undertone. On the palate, it’s a rich dance between spice and softness—clove, cinnamon stick, and peppermint tea cut through the creamy texture of bread pudding. The interplay of lighter malts and sherry-aged brightness against the bold oak brings out both elegance and edge in every sip.

Made from a Washington-grown grain bill of Pale, Munich, Extra Special, Pale Chocolate, and Brown Malts, and fermented with Belgian brewer’s yeast over 96 to 144 hours, this whiskey is as thoughtfully crafted as it is flavorful. Bottled at 46% ABV, it’s best enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to open up its complexities, offering a true taste of the Pacific Northwest in every glass.

Classic Ann Patchett: A moving family drama
Format: Hardcover
Ann Patchett’s new book WHISTLER is literary fiction in its purest form. Rather than a plot-driven story that goes from A to B, she writes about everyday moments in a way that makes the reader relate. Her stories are an in-depth study of humanness, of our shared experiences and our limitations. Much of this story is told in flashbacks, revealing a 1980 car accident involving MC Daphne and her stepfather Eddie; and here we learn the significance of a horse named Whistler. Daphne is an English lit teacher at a girls’ school and Eddie is a literary editor, so I loved their discussions. Surrounding these two are a host of unique and interesting characters: Daphne’s husband Jonathan, her birth parents, and younger sister Leda, a clinical psychologist. Although facts are related, the meat of the narrative is what the characters think, feel, fear, and regret. It’s a story about family relationships and the long-lasting effects of events and words for years afterward. It’s about the power of our memories. There’s something about Ann Patchett’s witty and perfectly crafted prose that grips the reader. She has an extraordinary ability to tell a simple story, highlighting human experiences in such a way as to make it an introspective venture.

Not good if you need Whole Foods gift cards
If you want to buy Whole Foods gift cards (which is why I got it) it flags it for fraud and doesnt let you. I was told you can spend at Whole Foods but not buy WF gift cards, even though it is a Prime Credit Card. Also if you buy WF gift cards online, you dont get the rewards since its from a gift card company and not Whole Foods.
