The Ross Animas Native Series Golden Trout Special Edition is one of the most extraordinary reels ever produced by Ross Reels — and one of the most meaningful. Inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the California golden trout, one of North America's most rare and stunning native fish, this limited-edition 4/5 weight reel is as much a work of art as it is a precision fly fishing instrument.
The California golden trout's native range spans less than 600 square miles high within the headwaters of the Kern River watershed in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Over the years these fish have lost access to large portions of their native waters, but much of what remains is protected within the Golden Trout Wilderness — a backcountry sanctuary spanning the Sequoia and Inyo National Forests. This reel seeks to honor that legacy and actively contribute to its preservation.
A portion of every reel sold goes directly to Trout Unlimited's Embrace A Stream grant program, where funds are dispersed to TU chapter projects focused on conservation efforts benefiting the golden trout. This is a reel that gives back every time it finds a new home.
Only 495 of these special reels exist. Each one is individually serialized from 1 to 495 with the word "Golden" engraved on the reel foot — making every single one a one-of-a-kind collectible. The vibrant golden-yellow colorway mirrors the luminous coloring found on a wild golden trout, while hand-painted spots on the drag knob directly reflect the species' iconic markings, adding an extraordinary level of unique beauty that no two reels share exactly.
