Achieve Flawless Chip-Free Finishes on Double-Sided Materials with Precision Compression Technology

The Freud 77-608 1/2" Mortise Compression Spiral Bit is a high-performance solution engineered for woodworkers who demand perfection when routing delicate, double-sided materials. Unlike standard compression bits, this mortise-specific design features a shorter up-shear length, making it the premier choice for milling grooves, mortises, and through-cuts in thin materials 5/8" thick or less. By combining up-cut and down-cut action, this bit compresses the fibers of the material toward the center, ensuring a splinter-free finish on both the top and bottom surfaces of melamine, veneered plywood, and laminates.

Built for industrial durability, the 77-608 is manufactured from Freud Premier Solid Carbide and enhanced with TiCo™ High-Density Carbide to provide 2X the cutting life and performance of standard uncoated bits. The bit is finished with Freud’s proprietary Black I.C.E. (Industrial Cooling Element) coating, which maintains a cool cutting edge and facilitates superior chip evacuation to prevent burning. Optimized for high-speed use in CNC machines, handheld routers, and table-mounted setups, this three-flute bit provides a faster feed rate and a smoother finish in hardwoods, softwoods, and composites.

Key Features

  • Precision Compression Design: Short up-shear length is perfect for clean grooves and mortises in delicate materials.
  • Multi-Material Excellence: Expertly routs melamine, veneer plywood, hardwood, softwood, and composites.
  • Black I.C.E. Coating: Innovative coating keeps the cutting edge cool and ensures superior chip evacuation.
  • TiCo™ High-Density Carbide: Specialized Freud carbide provides 2X increased life and performance versus standard bits.
  • Three-Flute Geometry: Features three cutters for faster feed rates and an exceptionally high-quality finish.
  • Versatile Application: Ideal for through-cuts in thin double-sided materials and professional-grade mortising.

Pro-Tip: To get the most out of your mortise compression bit, ensure that your first pass is deep enough to allow the down-shear portion of the bit to engage the top surface of the material. This creates the "compression" effect that prevents chipping. When routing grooves, a 7/32" or deeper initial pass will ensure that both the top and bottom of the groove remain perfectly crisp.
