Fitting and handling

Store sheets flat and off the ground in a dry, ventilated space before use, and allow them to acclimatise to the conditions of the installation area for at least 48 hours. Cut with a fine-toothed blade to reduce breakout on the face veneer, and pre-drill fixings close to edges to avoid splitting. Where the board will be exposed to any moisture, seal all cut edges with a compatible exterior-grade primer or end-grain sealer before fitting.

What is the difference between hardwood throughout plywood and standard WBP plywood?

Standard WBP plywood often uses a softwood or mixed-species core with hardwood face veneers. Hardwood throughout plywood uses hardwood veneer across every ply, which gives better screw retention, stronger cut edges, and improved overall stiffness for the same thickness.

Can hardwood WBP plywood be used outside?

The WBP adhesive bond is rated for damp and humid conditions, but the board is not treated against decay. For external use, all faces and edges must be thoroughly sealed with a suitable primer or preservative coating. For fully exposed applications, a marine or exterior-grade treated panel would be a more appropriate choice.

Which thickness should I choose for shelving?

For light-duty shelving with short spans up to around 600mm, 9mm is generally adequate. For heavier loads or spans over 800mm, 12mm will give noticeably less deflection. For drawer bottoms, cabinet backs, or template work, 3.6mm or 5.5mm is usually sufficient.
