Abstracted from original Personal Property Tax Records in the Library of Virginia.

Halifax is one of eighteen Virginia counties for which the 1810 census is lost. In August, 1814 British troops occupied Washington, DC and public buildings were put to the torch. In the destruction that followed, numerous early records of the government were lost, including all of Virginia's 1790 and 1800 census reports, as well as eighteen county lists for the state's most recent [1810] federal census. Although two "fair copies" of each county's census had been left in the counties for public display, these were ephemeral lists and not preserved, and by 1814 they too had been mislaid, lost, or destroyed. Hence, the closest document available we have to reconstruct a partial image of the missing county lists is the personal property tax list.

According to research notes by Minor T. Weisiger, Library of Virginia archivist: "Information recorded in Virginia personal property tax records changed gradually from 1782 to 1865. The early laws required the tax commissioner in each district to record in "a fair alphabetical list" the names of the person chargeable with the tax, the names of white male tithables over the age of twenty-one, the number of white male tithables between ages sixteen and twenty-one, the number of slaves both above and below age sixteen, various types of animals such as horses and cattle, carriage wheels, ordinary licenses, and even billiard tables. Free Negroes are listed by name and often denoted in the list as "free" or "FN."

The present abstract of Halifax's 1810 personal property tax list is NOT a transcript of the entire document; rather, it is a summary of three items important in delineating the 1810 "substitute" census for this county, i.e., number of male tithables 16 and older, number of slaves twelve years and older, and the number of horses. The original form of the census was in alphabetic order by date and letter [see example on page vi below]. The substitute list presented here is in absolute alphabetic order for easy reference.

In the current volume, the data is recorded thus:
Bruce, James 1      43      29
to indicate one tithable male, forty-three slaves over 12, and twenty-nine horses, mares or mules.

For genealogical researchers in this 1810 period, personal property tax records may provide additional important information. Oftentimes, juniors and seniors are listed adjacent to one another and recorded on the same day. When a taxpayer is noted as "exempt", it can be a clue to someone holding a particular position in government or being elderly, infirm, or for some other reason no longer required to pay the tithable tax. Women, both black and white, appear occasionally as heads of households when they own property in their own right or as the widow of a property owner.

Another valuable source for filling in information about an ancestor is the land tax record, and especially the one for 1815. In that year, the enumerators began to add the location of the property in relation to the county court house. Thus "Bruce, James", who was living with only himself as a tithable in 1810, would appear in the land tax list as Bruce, James, with three separate individuals with the same given name, along with the two John Bruces mentioned in the tax list; all of these were located in the district of Robert Hurt, while the home of Charles Bruce in the district assigned to Berryman Green was cited as being on Miry Creek. Roger Ward has abstracted all of the 1815 land tax records, and they are available as well.

The 1810 substitute census list for Halifax County contains 2,453 households, 2,725 tithables, both white and free black, 5,275 slaves over the age of twelve, and 6.010 horses.

Chemical Guys Leather Quick Detailer for Car Interiors 32oz
Size: 32 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Reliable Quick Cleaner for Leather Interiors I’ve been using the Chemical Guys Leather Quick Detailer on my car’s interior for a while now, and it’s become one of those go-to products I like to keep on hand. As the name suggests, this is designed for quick touch-ups rather than deep cleaning, and for that purpose, it really does the job well. The first thing I noticed is how easy it is to use. A couple of sprays on the leather seats or steering wheel, a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth, and the surface instantly looks cleaner. It removes light dust, dirt, and fingerprints in seconds. Unlike some products I’ve tried in the past, it doesn’t leave behind a slick or greasy feel, which is important when you’re dealing with things like a steering wheel or gear shifter that you’re constantly touching. Instead, the finish is clean, soft, and natural-looking, which is exactly what I want. The scent is another plus. It has a pleasant, subtle leather fragrance that makes the car smell fresh without being overwhelming or chemical-like. I don’t like products that leave behind a strong odor, and this one strikes the right balance. Another strength is its versatility. While it’s marketed as a car interior detailer, I’ve found it works well on other small leather items, like a laptop bag or even a chair at home. Obviously, it’s not a replacement for a full leather conditioner, but for light upkeep it’s nice to have a single product that can handle more than just my car. That said, there are a few things that keep this from being a perfect 5-star product. First, it’s definitely not designed for deep cleaning—if your leather is heavily soiled, stained, or dried out, this won’t be enough. You’d need a dedicated cleaner and conditioner for a full restoration. Second, the spray nozzle can be a bit inconsistent, sometimes giving off more of a stream than a fine mist. It’s not a huge issue, but it can waste product or make application less even if you’re not careful. Lastly, while it makes leather look clean and refreshed, it doesn’t provide as much conditioning as some other products, so if you’re looking for something that really nourishes and protects long term, this is more of a maintenance step than a solution. Overall, though, I’m very satisfied. The Chemical Guys Leather Quick Detailer is perfect for keeping leather looking sharp between major cleanings. It’s fast, effective, and leaves behind a clean finish without unwanted residue. It saves me time and keeps my car interior looking well cared for, which is exactly what I want from a quick detailer. I’d rate it 4 stars—an excellent product for regular maintenance and touch-ups, with just a few small shortcomings that prevent it from being the ultimate all-in-one leather care solution.

Works as advertised and smells good
Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
My daughter and I went to the beach. She didn't put her cover up back on and got sunscreen on the black leather seats. This stuff worked great. Cleaned it off and hopefully protects for anything else headed towards my seats in the future.

This will melt built up dirt in no time.
Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I bought a 3 bottle set that included the interior cleaner, cloth cleaner and leather cleaner. All three worked really well when I used them. The cloth cleaner lifted and disolved the surface dirt from the the seats and made easier to use a portable wet vac to vacuum the dirt. The interior cleaner did a far superior job on melting built up dirt on the seats, dashboard, steering wheel and other surfaces. The leather cleaner did pretty much the same as the other two and I can see myself buying this again. It dried quickly too
