Sven Hammond staat sinds de oprichting in 2006 bekend om rock, soul en blues: stijlen die altijd vertrouwd klinken, maar nooit vervelen. Zelfs met 9 uitgebrachte (live)albums op hun naam blijft de band vernieuwen en ontwikkelen.

De band heeft in de afgelopen twee jaar veel tijd in de studio doorgebracht, waar Sphere het resultaat van is. Op het album staat o.a. Monk’s Dream, dat Sven Hammond in oktober jl. uitbracht ter ere van de geboortedag van jazzlegende Thelonious Monk. Niet geheel toevallig is het album Sphere vernoemd naar de middelnaam van de Amerikaanse pianist en componist, want zijn werk en invloeden staan centraal op het album. 

Ook de nieuwe single Thelonious – Mijn Tempel,  waarin Sven samenwerkte met vocalist Gianski is één van de favorieten op het album. De Amsterdamse songwriter deed in 2018 al mee aan de popronde, maakte kort daarna zijn debuut en bracht vorig jaar september zijn EP Red Mij uit. Op Mijn Tempel begeleidt hij de losse, speelse instrumentals van Sven Hammond met aanlokkelijke teksten. 

Tevens zijn er nieuwe samenwerkingen te horen met jonge talenten uit de hiphop- en soulhoek van nu, waaronder Typhoon, Zoë Love Smith, Cheyenne Toney en Akwasi.

Sven Figee is sinds 31 december jl. bovendien de muzikaal leider van de - speciaal voor het nieuwe NPO 1 zaterdagavondprogramma Matthijs Gaat Door flink uitgebreide - Sven Hammond Big Band. Als huisband van deze nieuwe tv-show is de Sven Hammond Big Band de muzikale rode draad door het programma.

A step up, but still room for improvement

Yikes, the *shilling* on the reviews for this thing! Yes, it's a chair. There are a lot of mesh-backed office chairs for sale here. None of them are likely to change your life. I can say this chair is a step up in quality from the few others I've purchased online in the past. All hardware below the seat cushion is heavy steel; you won't be breaking this stuff in the near future--and it's a nice change from the almost-entirely-plastic offerings I see elsewhere. The provided hardware was packaged intelligently: it's all screws (and not too many of them) with various lengths, but they all have the same size hex-head and the package includes a nice matching T-bar to install them; moreover, if you follow the instructions it's basically "use the screws labelled Step 1 now" then "use the screws labelled Step 2 now"--hard to get wrong. The best part of the chair is the lumbar support. It's why I selected this particular variant, and it was a good choice: it's firm and adjustable and makes a difference. The back is comfortable, and the general motion of the chair (rocking, locking, up/down, swivel, roll) is exactly as you'd expect. I don't like arms on my chairs: when they're down I rest my elbows there but they're always too high so it bothers my shoulders eventually, and when they're up my elbows bump into them. So I usually remove the arms entirely during assembly--and in this chair that wasn't too hard, but it does leave some slightly unsightly connection points hanging free. That's not a mark against the chair itself--just letting you know; at worst I could point out that this chair's arm movement is maybe a little more limited than usual. The worst thing about this chair, though, is the cushion. I got the leatherette seat, because it's supposed to be comfortable and easy to clean. In practice it's *not* comfortable at all: it's soft enough, sure, but it's also *very* hot and makes me squirm repeatedly to try to improve my comfort the longer I sit here. I suggest getting the mesh-bottom version, if you're going to get this model.
