Bloei en uiterlijk van Prunus 'Accolade'

De bloei van de Prunus 'Accolade' begint vroeg in het voorjaar, vaak al in maart of april, voordat het blad zich volledig heeft ontwikkeld. De boom bloeit met overvloedige, zachtroze bloemen die in losse trossen aan de takken verschijnen. De bloei is niet alleen visueel aantrekkelijk, maar trekt ook insecten zoals bijen aan.

De bladeren zijn in de zomer frisgroen en verkleuren in de herfst naar warme tinten oranje en rood, wat deze sierkers een meerwaarde geeft buiten het bloeiseizoen. De groeiwijze is breed opgaand met een halfopen kroonstructuur. Op volwassen leeftijd bereikt deze sierkers doorgaans een hoogte van 5 tot 7 meter. Een soort die we ook veel terug zien is de Prunus Kanzan, dit soort heeft meer bloemproppen en is qua groei wat compacter.

Standplaats en onderhoud

De Prunus 'Accolade' groeit het best op een zonnige tot halfschaduwrijke standplaats in een goed doorlatende, voedselrijke grond. De boom is winterhard en goed bestand tegen het Nederlandse klimaat. Snoei is meestal niet noodzakelijk, maar kan in de zomer worden uitgevoerd om de vorm te behouden of dode takken te verwijderen.

Water geven is vooral belangrijk tijdens de eerste groeiseizoenen na aanplant en tijdens langdurige droogte. Een mulchlaag rond de stam helpt om vocht vast te houden en onkruidgroei te beperken.

Toepassing van Prunus 'Accolade' in de tuin

Geschikt voor diverse tuinstijlen

Door zijn beperkte hoogte en sierlijke bloei is de Prunus 'Accolade' zeer geschikt voor zowel kleine als grotere tuinen. Ook in plantsoenen of langs lanen komt deze sierkers goed tot zijn recht. De boom laat zich goed combineren met voorjaarsbollen, vaste planten en lage heesters voor een harmonieus geheel.

Dankzij de vroege bloei en de aantrekkelijke herfstverkleuring biedt de Prunus 'Accolade' in meerdere seizoenen een meerwaarde. Het is een boom die structuur en kleur brengt zonder veel onderhoud te vragen.
