Uiterlijk van de planten
- Kentia: elegante, groene bladeren die sierlijk overhangen. De diep groene, lancetvormige bladeren geven de Kentia een rustige, tropische uitstraling en zorgen voor een volle, maar toch kalme look.
- Strelitzia Nicolai: grote, robuuste bladeren met een diepe groene kleur. De lange, brede bladeren waaieren omhoog en creëren een exotische, imposante eyecatcher – perfect als statementplant in een hoge ruimte.
- Areca: fijne, veervormige bladeren die in clusters groeien. De lichtgroene, zachte bladdelen zorgen voor een luchtige, speelse uitstraling en brengen beweging in je interieur.
Standplaats & licht
- Kentia: houdt van een plek met indirect zonlicht of lichte schaduw. Vermijd direct, fel zonlicht om verbranding van de bladeren te voorkomen.
- Strelitzia Nicolai: voelt zich het beste op een zeer lichte standplaats en verdraagt ook direct zonlicht. Ideaal voor een lichte woonkamer, serre of grote raampartij.
- Areca: geef de Areca een lichte plek, bij voorkeur zonder felle middagzon. Helder, indirect licht zorgt voor een frisse, gelijkmatige groei.
Waterbehoefte & verzorging
- Kentia: houd de potgrond licht vochtig, zonder dat er water onderin de pot blijft staan. Geef ongeveer één keer per week water en controleer in de zomer iets vaker.
- Strelitzia Nicolai: geef water zodra de bovenste laag van de potgrond droog aanvoelt. In de zomermaanden vaker, in de winter minder. Zorg dat overtollig water weg kan lopen.
- Areca: zorg voor een constant licht vochtige potgrond. Vermijd uitdroging, maar laat de wortels nooit in stilstaand water staan.
- Voeding: geef in de lente en zomer elke 2–4 weken een milde kamerplantenvoeding voor grote, groene kamerplanten.
- Tip: besproei het blad af en toe licht om de luchtvochtigheid te verhogen en stof te verwijderen.

Through vivid storytelling and rich historical detail, Metaxas casts the Revolutionary era as a moral drama in which ordinary men were called to extraordinary courage against overwhelming odds in their fight for freedom. The book compellingly shows how patriots like Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, John Adams, Abigail Adams, Benjamin Rush, James Otis, Henry Knox, Paul Revere, John Hancock, Thomas Paine, George Washington, Martha Washington, and others, understood the conflict not merely as resistance to British overreach, but as a defense of God-given liberty against arbitrary, and often brutal, power.
A particularly striking theme throughout the book is the Founding Fathers’ deep reliance on Divine Providence. Metaxas highlights how many believed that human rights flowed not from kings or governments, but from God Himself, and that the outcome of the Revolution ultimately rested in His hands. A New Classic
Format: Kindle
I pre-ordered, so I was able to get the PDF and start reading early. Of all the books I own on the American Revolution, I think this one stands to become my "go to." It is encyclopedic in scope, but deftly avoids becoming a drudgery or a slog through a mire of textbook facts. Somehow, Eric has managed to include a great deal of detail without losing any of the drama. It’s the story that rises to the fore in a gripping tale that just happens to be true (and much more than that, is our heritage). All the trademark “Metaxas” hallmarks are here: judiciously placed humor and lightheartedness that never descends into silliness, seriousness that somehow never lacks in winsomeness, depth that never smothers. He manages to portray both the soberness that the subject deserves without losing the hopefulness that the story of the Revolution should inspire in us. And along the way, you’ll find yourself better understanding what “went down” and (just as importantly) what it means to you today. Excellent work. If you think another history book on the American Revolution cannot inspire you or keep your attention, this one is up to the challenge.

The History Teacher I Always Wished For

With his trademark wit and his eye for those wonderfully absurd details that most historians tend to overlook, Metaxas drew me deeply into the story. I found myself laughing out loud one moment and profoundly moved the next. The tiny anecdotes and humorous asides were not distractions at all — they were precisely what made these towering figures suddenly feel human and unforgettable.
Eric makes these historical figures flesh-and-blood again. He brings both heroes and villains vividly to life in a way that makes the drama of America’s birth feel immediate, thrilling, and deeply personal.
In short, Eric Metaxas is the history teacher I always wished I had. At 600 pages, this book reads with the ease and momentum of a paperback novel, yet carries extraordinary depth and scholarship. In the end, I came away with a renewed love for American history and a deeper gratitude for the souls who made this great country possible.

A fun, inspiring, thought-provoking read.
Format: Kindle
A witty, learned page-turner, replete with wacky anecdotes but suffused by wisdom and patriotic love. Metaxas shows how the biblical view of the human person made America possible, and weaves throughout the story pieces of evidence that Providence actively aided the pious patriots against their cynical, post-Christian enemies in Britain. I devoured this book in 72 hours, and now I want to go back and read it again.
