Sorbus aria ‘Gigantea’ is een brede piramidevormige Sorbus met een dichte kroon. Deze soort valt onder de Rosaceae familie en wordt ongeveer 8 á 12 meter hoog. De Sorbus aria ‘Gigantea’ wijkt weinig af van de Sorbus aria ‘Majestica’, echter groeit de ‘Gigantea’ sneller. Het blad van deze soort blijft in de herfst lang aan de boom hangen. In mei toont de boom een witte bloesem, waarna er oranje/gele vruchten aan de boom verschijnen. De besjes zijn aantrekkelijk voor vogels, dus zorgen voor biodiversiteit in uw tuin.

Sorbus aria ‘Gigantea’ valt onder de ‘Rosaceae’ familie oftewel de rozenfamilie. De Sorbus aria ‘Gigantea’ wordt in de Nederlandse benaming ook wel de meelbes en gewone lijsterbes genoemd.

De m eelbes 'Gigantea' is vrij groot van formaat en is daarom het beste geschikt voor grote tuinen. De boom staat het liefste op een plek in de zon of halfschaduw. Hij is goed winterhard en kan redelijk tot goed tegen een plek in de wind. De boom verdraagt verharding en is te planten in vrijwel elke grondsoort, dus zand- leem- en kleigrond. De boom is gewoonlijk niet giftig voor mensen of dieren, dus is ook geschikt om nabij een wei te planten. Aan de boom verschijnt in mei een witte bloesem, deze bloesem is erg aantrekkelijk voor bijen en vlinders.

De Sorbus aria ‘Gigantea’ ziet u vaker terug in brede straten, pleinen, parken, daktuinen en grote tuinen. De boom kan indien nodig vanaf november t/m februari en juni t/m augustus gesnoeid worden.
