Het kernhout van Afrikaans padoek is fraai fel oranjeachtig rood, ook wel koraalrood genoemd, vandaar ook wel de naam corail. Bij blootstelling aan het licht verkleurt deze tint snel tot vaalroodbruin en op de lange duur tot zwartbruin. Wanneer het hout tijdig wordt afgelakt met een zuurhardende blanke lak, blijft de fraaie kleur langer behouden. Het 100-200 mm brede spint is vuilwit tot crèmekleurig. Afrikaans padoek is een uitstekende, duurzame, fraaie en stabiele houtsoort.
