Karakteristiek voor de kustlandschappen van deze schilders zijn de uitgewogen kleur- en lichtwaarden en een losse, impressionistische toets. Behalve door zijn Hollandse strandgezichten werd Herrmann ook bekend door zijn rijkelijk met figuren gestoffeerde stadsgezichten van Amsterdam, Dordrecht, Vlissingen en Rotterdam.
