Als het net zich rond hen begint te sluiten, moeten ze onderduiken. Ze komen terecht in 't Hooge Nest, een villa verscholen in de bossen van 't Gooi. Spoedig zal het huis onder hun leiding uitgroeien tot een van de grootste onderduikadressen in Nederland.
Terwijl de laatste joden in het land worden opgejaagd gaat het leven van enkele tientallen onderduikers zo goed en kwaad als het gaat door, pal onder de neus van NSB-buren en nazikopstukken. Als het einde van de oorlog in zicht is, wordt het Nest verraden. Samen met de familie Frank belandt de familie Brilleslijper op het laatste transport naar Auschwitz.

A Classic That Requires Time
Format: Paperback
This book is for a particular type of reader. Robinson’s writing is beautiful, but not easy. The ideas are complex. It takes effort to get through. But, if you are interested in Black politics, and looking for fresh thinking, I recommend it highly.
The funny thing is, the title is misleading. It is more about Europe and the formation of capitalism, and what Robinson defines as The Black Radical Tradition. Marx is critiqued but not rejected, and held uneasily at arm’s length.
As Angela Davis wrote, this book needs to be read more than once. It’s like an album or a movie that is so unique and rich that you know you probably missed something on the first go-round. I expect to return to it many years to come.

One of the most important books of recent decades
Format: Paperback
It’s daunting (many of Robinson’s footnotes are like fascinating blogposts about history, so it’s a lot to get through, let alone think about. But Robinson's deeply-researched account of a Black radicalism independent of European ideas is enlightening. Robin Kelley's introduction to the new edition is worth reading on its own.
