Bamboe is een plantsoort dat ontzettend snel groeit. De plant maakt elk jaar nieuwe stammen aan die rap de hoogte inschieten. Om producten van de stengels te maken, worden de holle stammen in rechthoekige en platte strips gesneden. Deze strips worden vervolgens samengevoegd, waarbij de natuurlijke nerfstructuur van de bamboe duidelijk zichtbaar blijft.
