MAURICE, Thomas. The History of Hindostan, its Arts, and its Sciences, as connected with the History of the other great Empires of Asia, during the most ancient Periods of the World … The second Edition. London: printed by W. Bulmer and W. Nicol. 1820.

Three volumes, 4to. Contemporary calf, re-cornered and rebacked in the 20th century; spines lettered in gilt; pp. [x], [7]-36, [2, list of plates], [37]-522; [iii]-xx, [3], 24-303; [4], iv, [3] 8-337; 16 engraved plates (two folding), wear to extremities, foxing to some of the plates, otherwise good.

The orientalist Thomas Maurice had begun work on this impressive book in 1783. It came out first, in two volumes (1795- 1798). The work contains a history of Indian cosmogony, astronomy, the sciences in connection with astronomy and chronology, a history of literature and religion, all in comparison with other Asiatic (as one used to say back then) civilizations, such as the Greek, Jewish, Phoenician, Persian and Egyptian. The plates are of mythological designs and astrological symbols, as well as Hindu deities.

Provenance: From the library of The Honorable Society of King's Inns, Dublin with their stamps. The sale of this library through Sothebys in 1972 proved to be controversial. 'The society has generally kept a low profile in current affairs in Ireland, though it did come to prominence in 1972, when financial difficulties led to the society selling a considerable stock of non-legal books it had in its library. The library collection dates from the end of the 18th century (when the society also adopted its motto 'Nolumus mutari'), and was based on part of that of Christopher Robinson, senior puisne judge of the Court of King's Bench (Ireland), who died in 1787. Books were sold at auction at Sotheby's, London, and a considerable stock of them were sold to clients outside Ireland. This was seen at the time as a major cultural outflow, as many of the books were of historical and cultural significance' (the society's website).

Perfect if you're anything like me
Color: White, Size: 2 Layer
I have about 20 small jewelry boxes sitting in my closet, stacked up high, threatening to topple over any time I reach over them to grab something else. I don't know what's in those boxes, except that it's jewelry I purchased and liked well enough to keep so that I could wear it again. But since all of the pieces are closed up inside, I almost never wear them because I don't want to dig through all 20 boxes to find the 1 thing I want when I'm already almost late to wherever I'm going. If ANY of that sounds anything like you, you need this jewelry box. Is it the most premium thing you've ever seen? No, but does it have a lot of storage space for a pretty compact form factor and hold a ton of stuff? Yes, it totally does. And is the price super reasonable? Yes, it is. And if you kind of squint at it, and look through softer eyes, it doesn't really matter that yes, this is kind of cheaply constructed, and the dividers do move around a little bit because they're not anchored to the sides of the trays. I was able to consolidate all of those jewelry boxes down into this one box, and I no longer need to hold my breath when I try to grab something over the top of the pile because I was able to throw. them. all. out! The satisfaction of purging my own personal leaning tower of Pisa was worth the price alone. But onto the nitty gritty details: yes, the see-through part is acrylic and not glass. I'm okay with that because I don't need more breakable things sitting in my closet. Yes, the dividers aren't super stable. I'm okay with that because they work well enough and keep each piece where it belongs. Yes, it's pleather (aka "vegan leather"). I'm okay with that because I don't need cow hide to hold my jewelry to make it feel more precious, especially because most of my jewelry is pretty inexpensive stuff anyways. I don't notice any glaring cosmetic defects when looking at it, aside from the one very squiggly scratch in my acrylic top that doesn't bother me too much, but since it does mean that quality control may be a bit lacking, this gets a very solid 4 stars.

Elegant Jewelry Box
Color: Pink, Size: 2 Layer, Color: Pink, Size: 2 Layer
Very stylish and elegant jewelry box suitable for your jewelry needs. I needed something for my extensive jewelry collection. I use this for my everyday jewelry, and it works perfectly. I chose the two-tier jewelry box, and I love how sturdy it is. You can put a lot in the box without it being overcrowded. The blush color gives it a soft look, but also the compartments on the inside are soft as well. It is of good quality and a value for what you get.
