Explore the fascinating intersection of modernity and tradition in contemporary China with this insightful book. Authored by renowned ethnographer Paul Willis, who is celebrated for his groundbreaking work 'Learning to Labour', this engaging analysis delves into how the Chinese educational landscape reflects broader societal transformations. The narrative reveals the cultural dynamics at play, where mass migration—both physical and ideological—has redefined values and everyday experiences across urban and rural landscapes in China. As China undergoes rapid economic growth, propelled by a massive educational expansion, the school system emerges as a critical cultural stage. Here, students grapple with performance pressures, embodying the dualities of aspiration and disillusionment shaped by a rapidly changing society. This book unfolds the dramatic interplay between traditional values and modern aspirations, illustrating how the glorification of urban life, consumer culture, and digital technologies like smartphones and the internet shape youth identity and social norms.
With an ISBN of 9781509538317 and published by John Wiley & Sons in 2019, this book stands as a significant resource for scholars, students, and anyone interested in understanding the complex narratives woven through China's educational experiences. Perfect for those seeking to understand how history informs current cultural trends, offering vital insights into the exam-driven culture, collective ideologies, and the future-oriented aspirations of a nation.

Description:
This book analyses modernity and tradition in China today and how they combine in striking ways in the Chinese school. Paul Willis “ the leading ethnographer and author of Learning to Labour “ shows how China has undergone an internal migration not only of masses of workers but also of a mental and ideological kind to new cultural landscapes of meaning, which include worship of the glorified city, devotion to consumerism, and fixation upon the smartphone and the internet
Massive educational expansion has been a precondition for explosive economic growth and technical development, but at the same time the school provides a cultural stage for personal and collective experience. In its closed walls and the inescapability of its Âscores™, an astonishing drama plays out between the new and the old, with a tapestry of intricate human meanings woven of small tragedies and triumphs, secret promises and felt betrayals, helping to produce not only exam results but cultural orientations and occupational destinies
By exploring the cultural dimension of everyday experience as it is lived out in the school, this book sheds new light on the enormous transformations that have swept through China and created the kind of society that it is today: a society that is obsessed with the future and at the same time structured by and in continuous dialogue with its past.

Reliable Essential for Gentle, Everyday Care!
Scent: Baby Fresh, Size: 72 Count (Pack of 1), Scent: Baby Fresh, Size: 72 Count (Pack of 1)
Pampers Complete Clean Baby Fresh Scented Wipes have become a staple in our routine, and for good reason. From the very first use, it’s clear these wipes are designed with both effectiveness and gentleness in mind. They strike a thoughtful balance—strong enough to handle messes, yet soft enough for a baby’s delicate skin.
What stands out most is their versatility. These wipes truly live up to the “head to toe” promise. Whether it’s a quick diaper change, wiping sticky hands after meals, or freshening up on the go, they handle it all without irritation. The texture is just right—not too thin, not overly thick—and they don’t tear easily during use.
The light baby fresh scent adds a clean, comforting touch without being overpowering. It leaves your little one smelling refreshed rather than artificially perfumed, which is something many parents appreciate.
Another highlight is how moist they stay. Even after opening and closing the pack multiple times, the wipes retain their hydration well, making each use consistent and reliable. There’s no need to use multiple wipes for a single cleanup, which makes them both practical and cost-effective.
Overall, Pampers Complete Clean wipes deliver exactly what parents look for: dependable cleaning, gentle care, and a pleasant experience with every use. They’re a small but meaningful upgrade to everyday baby care.

Very happy with quality and strength
Scent: Baby Fresh, Size: 72 Count (Pack of 12)
Fantastic wipes. These are super thick and clean up baby great. These are the only thing that do not cause a rash on baby. Do not leave a sticky feeling after use. Smell is strong, not the best but not terrible. I can deal with it for the quality of the wipe.

Great for pets and pollen
Scent: Baby Fresh, Size: 72 Count (Pack of 1)
I use these to wipe down the pets when they come back inside. These are especially useful during pollen season. You can see the pollen and/or dirt on the wipes. This is much better than having it all over the house.
I love that they are unscented; I do not have to worry ablut these causing any irritation. They are moist enough to do the job without leaving the prts wet or with any residue. And, baby wipes are just as effective and MUCH cheaper than buying wipes that are marketed specifically for pets.
