ABOUT THE ARTFORM

BHIL paintings are a form of painting from folk and tribal art that is practiced by the second largest tribe in India. These paintings were known as 'Bhil Pithora' paintings, however nowadays Bhil is the commonly used term.

It was a ritualistic form of art devoted to the gods of the tribe- Baba Pithora and others who are depicted on series of horses. Gradually, the subject of the painting has moved towards nature which is the prominent theme now.

Bhil painting is characterised by the use of multi-coloured dots as in-filling.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sh. Sher Singh Bhabor, born in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh, paints in a contemporary Bhil style inculcated from the work of his mother, Smt. Bhuri Bai of Zher. Beginning to learn at the age of seven, he took after his mother in painting on paper and canvas since he was fifteen.

Sher Singh depicts stories recited during different rituals like Ghatlas, Gal Bapsi and Gal Gadera. Practising for years, Sher Singh developed an incredible sense of colour to be able to juxtapose them in constructing his forms, allowing a play of contrast and harmony on the pictorial space.

He was involved with a team at IIT Bombay for an animated film titled ‘Hum Chitra Banate Hain’. He worked closely with the scriptwriters to illustrate the tale of how painting came to be a part of the Bhil community ritual. His painted images were then animated for the film that received the National Film Award 2016 for the best animation film among other critical acclaim. (input from Saffron art)
