Donald Byrd - Stepping Into TomorrowOriginally released in 1974 and now reissued on vinyl, this album transformed the legendary Byrd's career direction. Originally released in 1974 and now reissued on vinyl, this album transformed the legendary Byrd's career direction. After years as a hard bop heavyweight and collaborator with the likes of Art Blakey, Coltrane and Herbie Hancock, Byrd found commercial and creative renewal through his partnership with producers Larry and Fonce Mizell. The third album in their five-record run on Blue Note, this pushed their progressive sound to deeper, darker territory, riding a funkier, more introspective current than his previous albums. The title track remains a defining work, its hypnotic groove and haunting optimism making it a favorite of future hip-hop artists like J Dilla and A Tribe Called Quest. Byrd's trumpet glides with elegant restraint, weaving through Chuck Rainey's basslines and Gary Bartz's saxophone work. Mizell's signature synthesiser textures add a lush and cosmic layer. Tracks like 'Think Twice' and 'Design A Nation' are grounded in sophisticated funk minimalism, blending subtle vocal refrains with intricate instrumentation. The gentler moments like 'Rock and Roll Again' and 'I Love The Girl', explore a softer, more soulful style without losing their sense of forward motion. Though often dismissed at the time by jazz traditionalists, 'Stepping Into Tomorrow' is now rightly seen as a cornerstone of 70s fusion and rare groove.

Not the best, but not the worst either
Format: Hardcover
By any means not the funniest book in the series, only the one on Krusty the Clown was more un-funny; but still a worthy addition to your collection and, just like all the others from the series providing a retrospective of anecdotes you might have forgotten.

Not that great
Huge "The Simpsons" fan. I watched all the episodes and read a lot of the comics and enjoy most. This one however was quite boring. Turns out I'm just not a big fan of Chief Wiggum. I really enjoyed The "Homer" and "Bart" book. But not this one. Maybe if you love Wiggum you'll love it. If you're not too fond of him then I wouldn't buy it.

Good for my collection.
Format: Hardcover
This was another quick and entertaining read. This instalment wasn't as enjoyable as some of the other books but it was still good. I'm glad to have it in my collection.

Arrakis Brought to Life: A Stunning Visual Gateway into Dune
Format: Hardcover
‘Dune: The Graphic Novel, Book One’ is an outstanding adaptation that captures the scale, tension, and atmosphere of Frank Herbert’s original novel while making the world of Arrakis far easier to visualize. The artwork does an exceptional job translating Herbert’s dense descriptions into vivid imagery—ornithopters slicing through the desert sky, the oppressive vastness of the sands, and the stark contrast between House Atreides and House Harkonnen all feel instantly real and immersive. What really shines is how the graphic format clarifies complex scenes and political dynamics without oversimplifying them. Key moments that can be challenging to picture in the prose novel become immediately understandable, helping readers grasp both the physical environment and the emotional weight of the story. Paul’s journey, the looming threat on Arrakis, and the undercurrent of destiny are all conveyed with clarity and restraint. This is an ideal companion for longtime fans who want a richer visual grounding of the story, as well as for newcomers who may find the original novel intimidating. Faithful, beautifully illustrated, and thoughtfully paced, ‘Dune: The Graphic Novel, Book One’ enhances the experience of Herbert’s masterpiece rather than replacing it and it leaves you eager for the next volume.
