Description

In the past half century our understanding of late medieval and early modern Italian society, culture, and medicine has significantly progressed into new and surprising directions. One region that has attracted special attention has been Tuscany, unique with rich archives that have yielded fresh insights and perspectives about the lives of pre-modern people. Among the fields of study that have received special attention are those that are highlighted and explored in this collection of essays: charity and the economy, culture and society, family and inheritance, and medicine and health. Interdisciplinary in approach, these eleven essays by leading historians present us with a variety of topics and microhistories that touch on some of the most important aspects of pre-modern Italian life: charity, finance, inheritance, sociability, dowries and family strategies, public perfomance, illness and its cures. Each of these subjects were issues to which the late historian, Philip Gavitt, devoted his professional life. This volume is dedicated to his memory and to the many significant contributions he made to our understanding of the premodern world.

Praise

This engaging collection is a window into the society of pre-modern Tuscany. Drawing on the extraordinarily rich Tuscan records, the articles address a range of questions that intersect in revealing ways. Many concern cultures of charity and gender expectations, notably hospitals and convents. Others pursue aspects of these themes, including medical cures, family struggles, and gendered sociability in taverns. The authors include many highly regarded scholars who are also engaging storytellers. The quality of their scholarship and the volume's geographic and thematic focus make it a particularly valuable resource for teaching. — Carol Lansing, University of California Santa Barbara

What is particularly attractive about this impressive collection of essays honouring the memory of Phil Gavitt is that it extends his pathbreaking scholarship with pathbreaking articles that showcase the best of his innovative archive-based scholarship. Scholars and students of the Renaissance will find here not only a fitting tribute to Phil, but also a series of microhistories that display the strengths of archival research as well as the excitement and fascinating perspectives such work offers. — Guido Ruggiero, University of Miami

Beautiful, Solid Real Wood Wrist Rest
Color: Walnut Wood, Size: Large
This wooden wrist rest feels premium and the finish is super smooth — it’s noticeably nicer than foam or gel pads. Real wood looks great on my desk and still feels comfortable during long typing sessions. Definitely worth it if you want something stylish and functional.

Sturdy Dual Monitor Riser with Great Storage and Desk Space
Color: Oak
This monitor stand seems like a really strong option if you want both better screen height and more desk organization. The biggest pros are the extra-wide 42.5-inch size, built-in drawers, and sturdy construction—listings say it can hold up to 99 lbs and is designed to support two monitors while freeing up space underneath for a keyboard and accessories. Reviews and product descriptions also consistently highlight the ergonomic benefit of raising the screens to a more comfortable level. The main downside is that stands like this take up a decent amount of desk depth, so you want to make sure your desk has enough room before buying. Overall, it looks like a great choice if you want a cleaner setup, dual-monitor support, and extra storage in one piece.

Monitor stand that stands up!
Color: White
This monitor stand is absolutely perfect. It gives back inches of desk space and provides additional storage with the shelves and 2 small drawers. Assembly was simple and the stand is sturdy and looks great. The profile is low enough that your monitors are not too high up from your laptop/keyboard. Definitely a game changes for the home office!

Great Monitor Riser/Stand!
Color: Oak, Color: Oak
I’m so happy with the way it turned out!! Easy assembly in about 15 min. It’s so cute and you can customize if you’d like the drawers to be on the left or right side. I just noticed a slight deviation in material dimensions so it looks a little off. But it’s still functional!

high quality and sturdy !
Color: Brown, Color: Brown
if you’re thinking about it, get it! i splurged to get this, but it’s so nice. it’s high quality and sturdy, plus it helps a lot to organize and keep things neat. putting it together was just like an ikea item and took much longer than i thought- around ~30-45 minutes, but it was worth it. i wanted a stand that would be able to fit my 2 monitors, and this is perfect. i’ve had it for over 6 months now and it still looks brand new! it really upgrades your desk space and makes it feel nicer. 10/10 recommend
