Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - Let's Turn It Into Sound"Art is awe, art is mystery expressed," writes Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. "Art is somatic, even if it is experienced cerebrally. It is felt." "Art is awe, art is mystery expressed," writes Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. "Art is somatic, even if it is experienced cerebrally. It is felt." The central mysteries of Smith's ninth studio album, Let's Turn it Into Sound, have to do with perception, expression, and communication: How can we communicate when spoken language is inadequate? How do we understand what it is we're feeling? How do we translate our experience of the world into something that someone else can understand? For Smith, a self-described "feeler," the answers are inspired by compound words in non-English languages, translation, sculptural fashion, dance, butoh, wushu shaolin, and other forms of sensory and somatic experience. Just like fashion uses lines, shapes, colors, textures, and silhouettes to communicate on a sensual level separate from the conscious mind, Let's Turn it Into Sound strives to use sound to communicate what words alone cannot. "The album is a puzzle," Smith says. "[It] is a symbol of receiving a compound of a ton of feelings from going out into a situation, and the song titles are instructions to breaking apart the feelings and understanding them." The energized "Is it Me or Is it You" comes from traversing the gaps between how you see yourself and how another might see you, through a filter of their own projections. The hushed sense of revelation that brackets "There is Something" refers to the feeling of walking into a room and being subconsciously aware of the dynamic present. All the while, Smith interprets these feelings through sound. This auditory interpretation process, driven by earnest curiosity, led Smith to record some thoughts and questions that popped up along the journey in Somatic Hearing-a booklet which accompanies the album. Over three frenzied months, recording alone in her home studio, Smith allowed herself to pursue new experiments to accompany her usual toolkit of modular, analogue, and rare synthesizers (including her signature Buchla), orchestral sounds, and the voice. She created a new vocal processing technique, and gave herself permission to pursue a pacing that felt intuitive, rather one that followed typical song structures. She walked around in the windiest season with a subwoofer backpack and an umbrella, listening to the low end of the album amidst 60mph gusts. She listened to herself, and, in doing so, to an inner community which suddenly opened to her. Underlying the album is a dynamic relationship between what Smith describes as six distinct voices, each a multifaceted storyteller. By acknowledging these characters, she was acknowledging her whole being: the woven plurality of self, the complex process of noticing and resolving inner conflicts, and the joy of finding harmony in flux. "I started to feel so embodied by all of these characters. This is all the felt, unsaid stuff [my inner community] wants to communicate but it doesn't have the English language as it's form of communication, and so [this album was a form of] giving space to let it talk and not judge it and just let it play." By not adhering to expected song structures, each song feels even more like a conversation, with each character getting to express themselves in full. Smith has never fit neatly into the ambient genre conversation she's most often associated with, and here she forges even further outside of it, traversing avant-garde pop, neoclassical, and the otherwise unclassifiable. The result is a playful, inquisitive, excitable work which appeals to us as social, sensitive animals, and invites listeners into a wholly idiosyncratic world that is both experimental, and, feels like the most human thing in the world. Proceeding through Let's Turn it Into Sound is like peeking into a secret realm: one that delights both in the discovery of the magic hidden in the everyday, and the shimmer that lingers long after the portal itself shuts.

Great for aggressive chewers
Style: Gorilla, Size: Small (Pack of 1)
My little Corgi is an aggressive chewer. She has destroyed quite a few toys that were advertised for chewers. When I received this toy I had little confidence but it has lasted unscathed. Aside from being sturdy it also bounces so we play ball with it. It is one of her favorite toys.

Strong and Great for Treats, but Heavier Than Expected
Style: Gorilla, Size: Small (Pack of 1), Style: Gorilla, Size: Small (Pack of 1)
This is a very durable and well-made chew toy with good overall quality. The material is thick rubber and holds up well to chewing. It also works very well for holding treats, which stay in place securely. The main drawback is the weight. My dog is about 30 pounds, and even though this is a smaller version, it is still fairly heavy. She tends to use it mainly to get the treats out and then loses interest afterward. What I like: Very durable material Works great for holding treats Good bounce and quality construction Cute design Things to be aware of: Heavier than expected Some treats may be difficult to insert Dogs may lose interest once treats are gone Overall: This is a solid treat-based toy that is built well, but the weight may limit how much some dogs interact with it beyond treat use.

Extremely tough!
Style: Gorilla, Size: Large (Pack of 1)
These are seriously so much better (and cheaper) than any other supposedly "strong/durable" type toy like this. We have 70lb very strong chewers and they chew through everything. Can not have stuffies. They do eventually chew through but it seriously takes awhile. Especially in comparison to other brands. I will say it says "recommended for dogs under 35lbs" but I also work for houses where I recommended these for their dogs which were smaller and they wouldn't chew on because too tough. But they also accidentally bought the large which is what I buy my big dogs. So the large is GREAT for big dogs. If you have a dog under 35lbs I'd get the size small. Also .... says you can stuff treats. You really can't. Which my dogs don't need. They just love to chew on. I call it their bubble gum because when they FINALLY get a chunk off(which again takes awhile.... as in over a week) they will fling the pieces into the air and chew on like a piece of bubble gum lol... they love it! I don't notice a difference in breath or anything but I don't use the toothpaste either. I just bought to see if tough and they are!! And again price is clearly so much better. I hate spending $20+ on a toy they destroy in a day.

Beware if your dog likes to chew
Style: Gorilla, Size: Large (Pack of 1)
It’s super cute and my dog loved it, but it didn’t last very long. My dog started peeling off pieces of it and eating it within three hours of play. If you have a dog that takes it easy on the toys I would recommend this one. Otherwise I recommend passing because there’s no way it’s safe for them to be swallowing these pieces.

Lasted pretty long for my aggressive chewer
Style: Gorilla, Size: Large (Pack of 1)
Right away I was excited with this product because of the smell, texture and thickness. Smells minty fresh which does help with breath smell. The texture is great, had smooth areas and rigid areas all while being soft and durable. The product is pretty thick, which I needed for my Pit-Bull. She doesn’t chew much but, when she decides to she is 110% in and dedicated to destroying that item. She chews through most things in less than a day. This product however lasted years before I started to notice damage. It is one of her favorite toys. She liked it so much I bought two, one for the house and one for the car for road trips. It’s the perfect toy to keep a chewer distracted inside a car, along side a deer antler, which also helps with dental hygiene. She gets dental hygiene compliments every trip to the Vet. We use multiple different things to help with her teeth and breathe but, I think this toy contributes the most to her healthy teeth. I call it a toy because she plays with it all the time. Definitely will keep buying long as they keep making it. This product is a must for all dogs, it’s almost perfect for my Pit-Bull
