Then there's a problem. The quills come out, it assumes it's defensive stance, and not even a grizzly bear wants anything to do with our prickly friend.
This might be why the porcupine is one of the longest-living rodents in America. Very territorial, porcupines know to respect others boundaries and property. It keeps everything copacetic. Plus with their excellent noses, they can smell trouble coming from far away and try and avoid it as much as possible.
