Mammillaria magnimamma priessnitzii

Origin and Habitat: central
Habitat and ecology: It grows in dry rocky places in the open or (mainly) in xerophyllous vegetation. Despite the great abundance and diversity of cacti in Mexico, Mammillaria magnimamma is one of the few cacti species that has colonized barren lava fields. In parts of its range the species is threatened by local extraction for ornamental plant trade and by the expansion of urbanized areas.

Description: Mammillaria magnimamma is a perennial stem succulent solitary at first, later branching basally to form large mounds up to 50 cm in diameter . barely rising above ground level. This species is very variable and has received many names.
Flowers: Dirty white, creamy-yellow or tinged brown with reddish midveins, to deep purplish pink, 20-25 mm wide and long and in diameter.
Blooming season: Mid spring.

Cultivation and Propagation: Mammillaria magnimamma is easy to cultivate, and makes an interesting specimens. Over time it will produce large clumps. It grows by producing offsets, and also by dividing and doesn't require any special treatment, but needs as much light as possible without burning the plant, to keep the stems compact. During the summer it is best to keep the plants outside where the temperature can rise to over 30° C with no harm to the plant, recommended for any collection that needs lots of light with ample airflow.
Growth rate: It is a small growing, but easily flowering species. It takes several years to offset, but once it starts it can fill a 40 cm pot in a few years given the best conditions.
Watering: It likes a winter's rest and should be kept almost completely dry during the winter months, If the soil is allowed to be dry for too long root loss could follow but equally the same result would occur if the plants are both wet and cold. From March onwards the plant will begin to grow and watering should be increased gradually until late May when the plant should be in full growth. Water regularly during the summer so long as the plant pot is allowed to drain and not sit in a tray of water.
Hardiness: Grown specimens resist to -4°C for a short time

Short Story Collection
Format: Paperback
This wasn't quite what I expected. It's a random selection of writers and illustrators all doing short stories that are just a few pages long. It gives you a deep appreciation for some of the talent many of these guys have and gives you many different perspectives on batman. Having said that, I have to be honest. Some of the illustrations were sub-par and some of the stories mediocre. A couple of the stories left me wondering if some of these guys had written batman anything before and others whether they were able to earn a living with their drawings. Despite that, there were many really good stories in here that are worth reading.

Like chocolate truffles
Format: Paperback
First off, this is a review of volume 1. I got several Batman graphic novels recently and get one out when I have a block of uninterrupted time for it. I thought that given the short-story format, that I'd leave this in the car and read one or two stories when I had a few minutes to kill. Sure - that's what I say when I get a box of candy too - just one or two at a time - make the box last for a month. LOL - I got going and finished the whole book in one sitting. The short stories are not all great, but even the weakest is worth at least three stars. Some of the others are wonderful. The most unexpected were the best: "A Black and White World" a Neil Gaiman story which features Batman and Joker in a way you've never seen them before, and "A Slaying Song Tonight" a Batman Christmas story.... who'd ever think of that? The art is varied - which is the point isn't it. Some I liked a great deal and others didn't move me, but each reader will have different tastes. I learned about some artists with which I wasn't familiar. I'm new to comics and graphic novels, so this was a great way to gain some exposure to some legends. A previous reviewer seemed to feel the black and white art limited the artists. I thought the short story format and the black and white art boiled the work down to it's most powerful essence. The stories didn't waste a word. The art didn't hide behind color. It was like each story was stripped down to the bare essentials. And no comic character is more natural for a black and white treatment than the Bat. It was like a film noir movie marathon! Volume One at the very least is a must-own part of any Batman collection. Highest recommendation!

Perfection From Start to Finish
Format: Paperback
Where do I start? Whats not to love about some the of the best writers and artists coming together in one book full of short Batman stories done in black and white? The story telling is unbelievable and the illustrations are so good you barely notice they aren't in color. This should be in every Batman fan's collection :)

a great series of comics
Format: Kindle
This is the first in a great series of short stories by different authors and artists. The quality ranges but it's nice to have the variety. It makes for a well rounded Batman book.
