Siguiendo la tradición de su país de origen de nombrar a sus hijos con base en algún acontecimiento relevante, sus padres le otorgaron un nombre mexicano. Nyong'o regresó a Kenia cuando tenía un año de edad. A los dieciséis años, Nyong'o regresó a México para aprender español, vivió en Taxco, Terminó sus estudios en Estados Unidos graduándose en estudios teatrales. Ganó el Óscar a la mejor actriz de reparto por 12 años de esclavitud, entre otros premios internacionales.
