Can Democracy Survive Global Capitalism? delves into the critical intersection between democracy and capitalism, questioning whether democratic ideals can endure amidst the relentless forces of global capitalism. In this impactful book, author Robert Kuttner, a prominent social critic, argues that the struggles of the working class in recent decades are not merely the results of trade, immigration, or technological changes, but rather the direct consequences of unchecked global capitalism. With wages stagnating and corporate profits soaring, Kuttner examines the alarming erosion of workers' rights and the growing influence of elites in politics. In this compelling narrative, Kuttner recalls the transformative periods of the past, such as Roosevelt's New Deal, showcasing how a balance between capitalism and democracy could be achieved. He presents a profound analysis of historical events, revealing how the resurgence of predatory capitalism since the 1970s has called into question the health of our democratic institutions.
This book is essential for anyone seeking to understand the dynamics of global capitalism and its implications for democracy. The readers are invited to engage with Kuttner's insights and consider the potential pathways for reform. Can we reshape capitalism to support democratic values? Or are we destined to witness a continued decline in democratic governance as a result of economic exploitation? Discover the answers in this thought-provoking exploration of economics and politics.

Description:
One of our leading social critics recounts capitalism™s finest hour, and shows us how we might achieve it once again.
In the past few decades, the wages of most workers have stagnated, even as productivity increased. Social supports have been cut, while corporations have achieved record profits. Downward mobility has produced political backlash.
What is going on? Can Democracy Survive Global Capitalism? argues that neither trade nor immigration nor technological change is responsible for the harm to workers™ prospects. According to Robert Kuttner, global capitalism is to blame. By limiting workers™ rights, liberating bankers, allowing corporations to evade taxation, and preventing nations from assuring economic security, raw capitalism strikes at the very foundation of a healthy democracy.
The resurgence of predatory capitalism was not inevitable. After the Great Depression, the U.S. government harnessed capitalism to democracy. Under Roosevelt™s New Deal, labor unions were legalized, and capital regulated. Well into the 1950s and ™60s, the Western world combined a thriving economy with a secure and growing middle class.
Beginning in the 1970s, as deregulated capitalism regained the upper hand, elites began to dominate politics once again; policy reversals followed. The inequality and instability that ensued would eventually, in 2016, cause disillusioned voters to support far-right faux populism. Is today™s poisonous alliance of reckless finance and ultranationalism inevitable? Or can we find the political will to make capitalism serve democracy, and not the other

Nice economy casual sweater,
Size: Large, Color: Off-white
The sweater is fine for the price, with correct fit. Arrived fast. Nice neutral cream/oatmeal color. It has a fairly loose open weave and is predominantly cotton, so it’s quite breathable and well suited for layering in cool but not truly cold weather. The knit is a little coarse, not really scratchy but not very soft. It’s a good value for what they charge. And fine for casual wear. But I ultimately decided to return it and spend a lot more to get a merino wool sweater because they are dressier, much warmer for weight, MUCH softer, and less bulky under a jacket. I like to wear mock turtlenecks under a sport coat in the fall and this sweater was a little too thick for that.

Soft and comfortable but runs a bit large
Size: Medium, Color: Off-white
I got this turtleneck in the off white color, and it looks very clean and easy to style. The color is true to what is shown and works well with casual or more dressed up outfits. The fabric feels soft and has a nice amount of stretch, which makes it comfortable to wear for longer periods without feeling stiff.
The sweater feels lightweight but still warm enough for cooler days. It is not heavy or bulky, so it layers easily under jackets or coats. It also seems fairly wrinkle resistant. After wearing it and folding it, it still looked neat without needing much adjustment.
In terms of fit, it does run a little big. I usually wear a medium, and while this one is still wearable, it feels slightly looser than expected, especially through the body. It is not a big deal, but I would probably order a smaller size next time for a more fitted look. The turtleneck itself sits comfortably around the neck and does not feel tight or irritating.
Overall, it feels like a comfortable and easy to wear piece with good stretch, a nice lightweight feel, and a clean look. Just something to keep in mind on sizing if you prefer a closer fit.

Don’t recommend
Size: Medium, Color: Black
Got this as a last minute shirt for an event and it was roughly $12 on sale. The quality was ok, first wear was fine but it doesn’t hold up after washing and air drying. I don’t recommend unless only wearing once, there was a lot of shedding and pilling after the first wear. I’m rough 5 ft tall and about 140 lbs. and I got a M and it sat around my hips so unless your on the tall side this wouldn’t fit.
