DOUGHTY, Charles M. Wanderings in Arabia ... being an Abridgement of "Travels in Arabia Deserta". Arranged with Introduction by Edward Garnett. London: Duckworth & Co. 1908.

Two volumes, 8vo. Publisher's original green cloth, lettered in gilt to spine, top edges gilt; pp. xx, 309; x, 297; photogravure frontispiece of Doughty to vol. I, wood-engraved frontispiece to vol. II, 1 double-page map; some chipping to head and tail of spines, foxing at front and rear of each volume; this is a rare inscribed copy presented by the author to the medieval scholar G.G. Coulton, signed to that effect on half-title of volume I.

First abridged edition. Doughty's Travels in Arabia Deserta was first published in 1888, but abridged by Garnett in the present form. Doughty's journey, undertaken between 1875 and 1878, "did much to advance knowledge of north-western and central Arabia' (Henze). He was the first European to see the city of Mada'in Salih, near the northern border of Hejaz, crossed the expanse of Arabia to Jeddah, and returned via Bombay. Doughty's "unique style of English, which [he] vehemently refused to have edited", led to four commercial presses turning down his manuscript before the Cambridge University Press agreed to publish it in 1888. "The result was one of the great classics of travel literature which, although exceptionally demanding for the reader, passed through numerous reprintings" (Howgego III, p. 246). The geological and geographical descriptions are of such accuracy and detail that it became a military textbook for the British Army during the final phases of the Arab revolt.

A covering letter from Ruth Robbins, who had sent this copy to a friend in 1974, contains important information regarding the book's provenance: "it bears Doughty's own inscription, as he personally gave it to the well-known medieval scholar, Prof. G.G. Coulton of Cambridge. Coulton and Doughty met in Eastbourne, and apparently got on very well together (Doughty did not like meeting people on the whole). They spent many hours in conversation, I have been told, and this gift book was the result". Ruth Robbins had researched Doughty's literary output and she wrote the preface of the 1943 edition of Doughty's epic poem The Dawn in Britain.

Durable and Rugged
Color: Black
I've had it for a few weeks now. It was a replacement I bought after buying several vinyl type covers. This one is a good gauge of plastic and rubber. The rubber seems pretty strong and it protects the iPad well on the corners and back. The back is mostly covered except for the Apple logo in the center. In addition to protecting the corners and also protects the camera lens as the rubber after insulation is a little bit higher than the lens so when you put this down, it's not going to scratch the lens. It has a pen slot, which I like and plenty of room to grip the device if I'm carrying it from place a place or when I'm using it, I can grip the edge and not touch the screen. One of the things I would've liked included is a screen protector, but nothing covers the screen. I also miss the folio type cover because the screen will gather dust now. But, Apple screens are fairly durable so I'm not too worried about breaking it. It was easy to install. It came in as it came in a couple of pieces that you just pressed together. All the controls are obvious as they are under the rubber, but they look like keys. One more thing I might bring up is the charging port. It's easy to get to even though it's a little deep. On my iPad the touch sensor is on the on off button and it is a little harder to do than if I didn't have any case on it, but that is to be expected. It also has an easel that unfolds from the back if you want to sit it up, but I don't use it for watching anything since I have a real TV set. So far I like it and I'm glad I bought this as I don't think it's going to wear out as quickly from me handling it as the others did. The value was good as long as it lasts.
