BLUNDEN, Edmund. The Weathercock - La Girouette. [London], Ulysses Bookshop, 1931.
Large 8vo. Original printed envelope; pp. [4], one bifolium; envelope with soiling and tear to fold of flap, internally very good; provenance: ownership inscription of Roger Senhouse, dated 1937 on envelope.
First edition, number 38 of a printrun of 45, numbered and signed by the author on title, ms. number in limitation at the end.
This First World War poem is printed here lithographically in cursive on opposite pages in English (one correction on the lithographic stone) and French. Blunden explains the production process of this poem on the final page. 'These verses were written by way of recreation in the Ypres salient towards the end of 1917. At that time a habit of reading French verse characterized the author and explains these stanzas! If any apology be required as well, let it be recalled that "there was a war on" - and on such relics as this have their own value to those who remember it'.
All we were able to find out about Ulysses Bookshop in London is that they published the Blunden bibliography in the year of this publication, and reprinted - without authorization - early essays by James Joyce. The bookshop was run by Jacob 'Jake' Schwartz, previously a dentist in Brookly NY, and later a rare book dealer.
Provenance: Roger Senhouse (1899-1970) was literary agent, publisher and translator, as well as a member of the Bloomsbury Group.
